do you speak dog?
Review of Cesar's Way: The Natural, Everyday Guide to Understanding and Correcting Common Dog Problems - Cesar Millan by
murphypig
Advantages: inspiring, interesting, you can learn a lot
Disadvantages: you can't hear Cesars great mexican accent
First of all, I have to say that through his TV program, Cesar Millan became a bit of a hero to me. But even if you don't know him yet, you will still enjoy his book, if you keep an open mind and listen to him carefully.
Cesar Millan:
Cesar is a mexican dog psychologist who runs a rehabilitation Centre in Los Angeles. He works with Celebrity dogs as well as problem dogs from shelters. His aprouch is, that he trains people and rehabilitates dogs. ... ...like "dog borstal" or "it's me or the dog". He has a natural talent and a huge love for all creatures, or do you know anyone else who would take 40 dogs into the mountains every day for 4 hours?
the story:
Cesars book starts with telling you about his backround. Where he grow up and how he got to Los Angeles. This is one of my favourite bits. It's a great read and very inspiring to see how this young mexican guy follows his dream. Later the book ...

mr-zeeman sniffs out a decent dog book
Review of The Hidden Life of Dogs - Elizabeth Marshall Thomas by
mr-zeeman
Advantages: Satisfyingly dog-centred
Disadvantages: Has given mr-zeeman an appetite for another dog
...by Roy Hattersly; "Dogs in the News" by Martyn Lewis"; "500 Mile Walkies" by a chap whose name I have temporarily forgotten; "Dog Facts" by Joan Palmer … and a whole sagging shelf-load of other titles.
Hence it was with massive coronary-inducing excitement that I handed over 20pence in a charity shop in exchange for a dog-related volume that I hadn't seen before … "The Hidden Life of Dogs" by Elizabeth Marshall Thomas [E.M.T for brevity]. A quick ... ...and easily-digested academic study of the behaviour of domestic dogs. ~~~~~~
"How might dogs conduct themselves if left undisturbed in normal circumstances?"
This was the recurring thought that propelled dog enthusiast Elizabeth Marshall Thomas into conducting a totally unsentimental piece of research into normal, unrestricted, uncontrolled, canine behaviour. At first glance one would assume that this very same thought had reverberated through ...

101 Essential Tips Training Your Dog
Review of 101 Essential Tips: Training Your Dog - Bruce Fogle by
morphcat
Advantages: Reasonable cost, covers lots of different issues
Disadvantages: does not go into a huge amount of detail
This small book covers the basics of dog training as well as including sections on choosing the right dog for you, equipment that you will need and behaviour problems that you might need to correct. In this respect it is useful for training puppies and older dogs. It is nicely illustrated throughout with pictures which demonstrate people doing the training exercise with a dog which makes it easier to visualise and copy. It is I think a good starter ... ...any one specific problem so it is not really suitable for someone with a specific problem. It is more a general training manual. It covers teaching your dog how to sit, stay, down, come, fetch, walking to heel, giving a paw and stay. There are suggested remedies for various problems that your dog may exhibit eg jumping up, howling, being a pest in the car etc. The training is all reward based and does not suggest any punishments at all apart from ...

THE PRINCIPLE- AMICHIEN BONDING
Dogs were once "pack animals" and although lifestyles and appearances have changed over thousands of years the wolf pack instinct still remains.
The "alpha pair" was the strongest, healthiest and most intelligent .Among the pack it is only the "Alpha pair" who breed, ensuring a strong line of descendants. They are responsible ...
