This book is a must have for anyone thinking about buying a puppy or already owning one, The Perfect Puppy was recommended to me by my dogs breeder when I bought her and it is full of very useful information. I have a few other dog training books but this is the one I keep referring to, since buying this book I havent opened my others. The author of this book, Gwen Bailey, is the Dog ... ...and knows her stuff.
The contents are divided into 19 chapters starting with a bit of advice on choosing your puppy, the most popular breeds and their needs, some advice on whether to buy from working or show stock, and what to look out for in a breeder. Next the author tells you how to read your puppys body language etc. Their is also some information on dogs abilities, their sense of smell, eyesite and how sensitive to sound they are.

Walking Ollie: Dog Owners must read!
Review of Walking Ollie: Winning the Love of a Difficult Dog - Stephen Foster by
Balcyboy
Advantages: Reading, enjoyable book, funny!
Disadvantages: None!
Walking Ollie: Dog Owners must read!
Walking Ollie is a genius book written by Stephen Foster, as an owner of 2 dogs my self I found this book hysterically funny and struggled to keep my eyes off it until I had read it. The book is many things but not a negative one could be listed, the author is discovering what it's like to be a dog owner and although may sound a little boring. Don't knock it until you've read it. It shows the typical bitchiness ... ...ego that builds up just walking past a dog owner for the 3 seconds, this book has everything from, comedy, drama, action yet it's just about a man trying to gain the love of a tough dog! Buying this book will.. Heck.. May even make you get a dog yourself! ...

What's up with my Dog?
Review of RSPCA What's Up With My Dog - Bruce Fogle by
morphcat
Advantages: reasonably priced and covers main symptoms shown by sick dogs
Disadvantages: there are none
This has proved to be a very useful little book for those moments over a weekend when the vet is not available and your dog is showing alarming symptoms. There is a different section for every symptom and a very useful overview of what might be wrong with your dog. There is then an even more useful section which asks you questions about exactly what the dog is doing. eg Is he vomitting blood? Yes/No and you then follow the path which fits most closely ... ...there is a suggestion as to what action should be taken eg see vet within 24 hours; or reassuringly, your dog can be treated at home.
It is particularly useful for new dog owners whose dog has not built up a repertoire of symptoms which you recognise. It is all too easy to panic and call out the emergency vet in the early days of dog ownership when all he has is a simple case of diarrhoea which can easily be treated at home. This book could save ...

101 Essential Tips Training Your Dog
Review of 101 Essential Tips: Training Your Dog - Bruce Fogle by
morphcat
Advantages: Reasonable cost, covers lots of different issues
Disadvantages: does not go into a huge amount of detail
This small book covers the basics of dog training as well as including sections on choosing the right dog for you, equipment that you will need and behaviour problems that you might need to correct. In this respect it is useful for training puppies and older dogs. It is nicely illustrated throughout with pictures which demonstrate people doing the training exercise with a dog which makes it easier to visualise and copy. It is I think a good starter ... ...any one specific problem so it is not really suitable for someone with a specific problem. It is more a general training manual. It covers teaching your dog how to sit, stay, down, come, fetch, walking to heel, giving a paw and stay. There are suggested remedies for various problems that your dog may exhibit eg jumping up, howling, being a pest in the car etc. The training is all reward based and does not suggest any punishments at all apart from ...
