Me or the Dog - now ME & MY DOG
Review of It's Me or the Dog: How to Have the Perfect Pet - Victoria Stilwell by
rolletrog
Advantages: Effective, simple, chapters
Disadvantages: you still have to put the work in
...how to discipline too. It's also reasurringly written in that it's not patronising and helps you understand your dog - there's sections on body language and noises - it's fairly in depth but at the same time split into sections so you can find the bit on crate training, or toilet training, or barking whenever you need it. It definately helped me train Doughnut and now we're best of pals (she'd sell my soul for a bonio but...). I got my copy of ebay ...

mr-zeeman sniffs out a decent dog book
Review of The Hidden Life of Dogs - Elizabeth Marshall Thomas by
mr-zeeman
Advantages: Satisfyingly dog-centred
Disadvantages: Has given mr-zeeman an appetite for another dog
...by Roy Hattersly; "Dogs in the News" by Martyn Lewis"; "500 Mile Walkies" by a chap whose name I have temporarily forgotten; "Dog Facts" by Joan Palmer … and a whole sagging shelf-load of other titles.
Hence it was with massive coronary-inducing excitement that I handed over 20pence in a charity shop in exchange for a dog-related volume that I hadn't seen before … "The Hidden Life of Dogs" by Elizabeth Marshall Thomas [E.M.T for brevity]. A quick ... ...and easily-digested academic study of the behaviour of domestic dogs. ~~~~~~
"How might dogs conduct themselves if left undisturbed in normal circumstances?"
This was the recurring thought that propelled dog enthusiast Elizabeth Marshall Thomas into conducting a totally unsentimental piece of research into normal, unrestricted, uncontrolled, canine behaviour. At first glance one would assume that this very same thought had reverberated through ...

What's up with my Dog?
Review of RSPCA What's Up With My Dog - Bruce Fogle by
morphcat
Advantages: reasonably priced and covers main symptoms shown by sick dogs
Disadvantages: there are none
This has proved to be a very useful little book for those moments over a weekend when the vet is not available and your dog is showing alarming symptoms. There is a different section for every symptom and a very useful overview of what might be wrong with your dog. There is then an even more useful section which asks you questions about exactly what the dog is doing. eg Is he vomitting blood? Yes/No and you then follow the path which fits most closely ... ...there is a suggestion as to what action should be taken eg see vet within 24 hours; or reassuringly, your dog can be treated at home.
It is particularly useful for new dog owners whose dog has not built up a repertoire of symptoms which you recognise. It is all too easy to panic and call out the emergency vet in the early days of dog ownership when all he has is a simple case of diarrhoea which can easily be treated at home. This book could save ...

101 Essential Tips Training Your Dog
Review of 101 Essential Tips: Training Your Dog - Bruce Fogle by
morphcat
Advantages: Reasonable cost, covers lots of different issues
Disadvantages: does not go into a huge amount of detail
This small book covers the basics of dog training as well as including sections on choosing the right dog for you, equipment that you will need and behaviour problems that you might need to correct. In this respect it is useful for training puppies and older dogs. It is nicely illustrated throughout with pictures which demonstrate people doing the training exercise with a dog which makes it easier to visualise and copy. It is I think a good starter ... ...any one specific problem so it is not really suitable for someone with a specific problem. It is more a general training manual. It covers teaching your dog how to sit, stay, down, come, fetch, walking to heel, giving a paw and stay. There are suggested remedies for various problems that your dog may exhibit eg jumping up, howling, being a pest in the car etc. The training is all reward based and does not suggest any punishments at all apart from ...
