Advantages: Smart, funny, horrifying - a glorious action/adventure tour-de-force. Disadvantages: You might be waiting for the big message to jump out at you. Unless you really need to be told to be careful around vampires, you won't find one.
'GuiltyPleasures' is the first novel in the series by LaurellK. Hamilton detailing the life and times of AnitaBlake, VampireHunter. Now calm down - before you start yelling 'Buffy rip off!', I should point out that this novel was first published in the States way back in 1993. At the time, Buffy was nothing more than a dismal movie flop starring Kirsty Swanson, and AnitaBlake was coming into her own. Still, if I hadn't heard from some American friends that these books were good, I might well have been put off by the tacky covers, and that same thought that this might be a cheap cash-in.
In Laura Hamilton's fictional world, vampires have just been declared legal citizens if the United States of America, with rights equal to those of the living citizens. They have merged into our society, if not seamlessly, then at the very ...
Advantages: Readable, scary(in parts)and action packed Disadvantages: not much depth to it
I read this about a week ago after picking up a cheap copy. I'd heard a lot about this series as it seems to have been well publicised (this may just be me).
The plot concerns AnitaBlake, vampirehunter, and raiser of the dead. The vampirehunter part is a bit of a misnomer as she spends much of the book helping them. It would be more accurate to say she dislikes vampires but only kills them if they become to much of a nuisance. Anita is employed by the police on a series of vampire killings. She is also asked(coerced)to investigate these killings by Jean Claude, a master vampire.
The plot therefore is fairly easy to follow. The vampires turn out to be being killed by ..(but that would spoil the book), suffice to say it has to do with a desire for immortality.
The strength of this book is that it happens in our near ...
Advantages: Excellent storyline and characters Disadvantages: n/a
I found this book along with the rest of her books truly excellent and intoxicating. I love all of her books and the way the book is wrote keeps the reader want to finish the book all in one go.
I can find no fault any of her books. the characters are just perfect for the whole series, this book is excellent. we get to see and learn more of Anita's skills, how she copes with her love life and her job at the same time
Anita faces more serious and more demanding problems that James Bond ever will. LaurellK. Hamiliton is an understated author who should be more well known so that people will read her books
I highly recommend this book and the rest of the series ...

Stephen King's claim to fame ; Superb atmosphere ; Sublime plot ; A vivid imagination that stretches all supernatural boundaries ; Probably responsible for some of the best horror films of the 70's and 80's
Some unessesary background in the first half ; Kubrik mucked up the story too much ; Could have been much more (*)
