Resistance - Anita Shreve Resistance - Anita Shreve
As the wife of a Resistance member in German-occupied Belgium Claire Daussois has grown ... more
used to hiding strange men in her attic. By the
end of 1943 the tiny room has housed dozens of
Allied airmen soldiers and other refugees whom
Claire nurses and harbours from the perpetual
threat of discovery by the Gestapo. The B-17
bomber that crash-lands outside Claire's village
of Delahaut contains the man who will be both the
last and the most significant of the attic's
residents: US Air Force pilot Ted Brice. Ted is
found severely wounded and semi-conscious by
ten-year-old Jean Benoit minutes before the
Germans begin their search for survivors. Knowing
of Claire's connections with the Resistance and
desperate to atone for his father's shameful
collaboration Jean realises that Claire is the
pilot's only hope of survival. The month that
follows will stay with them both for the rest of
their lives. A few weeks only a handful of days it
is a period in which the war recedes in the face
of more powerful forces - before imposing itself
once more with shocking suddenness.

marriage and a cottage on the coast of New
Hampshire. While Honora fixes up the derelict
house and searches for bits of sea glass on the

Americans he is blindsided by the stock market
crash and finds himself penniless. The only work
he can find is at a nearby mill where a labour
conflict is erupting into violence. Shaken by
forces they scarcely understand Honora and Sexton
try to build a marriage and home while overwhelmed

Sea Glass - Anita Shreve Sea Glass - Anita Shreve
Anita Shreve's new novelSea Glassrepresents a remarkable advance. She previously caught ... more
the attention of many readers withFortune's
RocksandThe Pilot's Wife, beautifully crafted
novels with rich and subtly observed
characterisation. But however impressive those
books were,Sea Glasshas the same adroit creation
of character, but the prose is even more rich and
allusive. This is a story of the human heart, of
the demands of the past, and of the necessity for
pragmatism in human relationships. It's 1929, and
Honora Beecher and her husband Sexton are enjoying
their new marriage in a cottage on the coast of
New Hampshire. Honora is renovating the rundown
property and searching for pieces of coloured
glass washed up on the beach. Sexton attempts to
buy the house they both adore, but with disastrous
results: like many other Americans, he is a victim
of the stock market crash and is financially wiped
out. He is forced to work in a nearby mill, where
a labour conflict is having violent results. The
couple's struggle to maintain their marriage in
the face of dangerous forces that threaten to
overwhelm them is vividly and poignantly
told.Shreve has written nine novels and throughout
her work she has painstakingly honed her
storytelling skills with elegance and
intelligence. She is particularly skilful at
depicting interlocking lives, as inSea Glass, and
adroitly invests each with its own portion of love
and tragedy. If you want to be one of the "early
adopters" of Shreve's cherishable novels, now is
the time:In the wet sand by her foot, a bit of
colour catches her eye. The glass is green pale
and cloudy, the colour of lime juice that has been
squeezed into a glass. She brushes the sand off
and presses the sea glass into her palm, keeping
it for luck.--Barry Forshaw

A School Reunion Reawakens Ghosts and Passions
Review of A Wedding In December - Anita Shreve by  koshkha

Advantages: A good solid read
Disadvantages: No great plot twists and turns

...Anita Shreve ************ Anita Shreve is a writer I first discovered with her book ‘The Pilot’s Wife’ – a scarily prescient novel about a plane crash in which there is a terrorist sub-plot. Reading her 2005 novel ‘A Wedding in December’, it was strange to see her return to those events as a subtle circumstantial sub-topic of a much broader tale of private and public loss and grief. Shreve isn’t one of the writers for whom I’d rush out to the bookshop with my credit card burning a hole in my pocket out of sheer excitement to have a new book as soon as possible (I know it’s sad but there are some writers that DO get me that fired up). Slowly but surely though she weasels her way into my book shelves, gets read and generally gets passed on to friends that I’m sure will like and appreciate her. Truth be told, I’ve probably never paid... Read review

Olympia's Fortune
Review of Fortune's Rocks - Anita Shreve by  AJ26

Advantages: Good Read
Disadvantages: None unless you don't like it

...This book was one of many I read recently on my holiday so I thought I would write a review on it. Anita Shreve a former school teacher is an American author and has written several books including The Pilots wife, Resistance, Strange Fits of Passion and Eden Close. Most of her novels are set in America and usually centre around a main female character. Some of her novels including Fortunes Rocks are set in the past and Anita Shreve goes to considerable lengths to ensure they tie in accurately with the history of that time. She has a very descriptive style of writing, setting the scene so clearly that the reader really feels they are there with the character. Fortunes Rocks is set in 1899 and centres around the main character a 15 year old girl called Olympia Biddeford. Olympia and her parents have left Boston for the summer... Read review

The Last Time I’ll Read This Book
Review of The Last Time They Met - Anita Shreve by  audreyh

Advantages: Innovative structure to the book, well written passages.
Disadvantages: Hard to care about the characters, plot quite convoluted, totally confused by the ending.

...I have read and enjoyed a number of Anita Shreve’s novels (Resistance, Sea Glass and Fortune’s Rocks to name but a few) and expected to thoroughly enjoy The Last Time They Met, her 2001 novel that is highly acclaimed on the covers of her later works. As with her other books, this novel is well written in terms of the style and language used but while the structure of the book (in three sections of reverse chronology) feels clever and innovative, the novel loses out because of it. Shreve holds back on describing the characters in any detail as we are supposed to build up a full picture of them as we go back through the three sections. The problem was that I felt that I didn’t know enough about them to really care one way or another what happened to them. The Last Time They Met is about the relationship between Linda Fallon...
