What can I say, this woman is a goddess!! Not only does she have a fantastic command of language her novels are so gripping that each time I read them I'm always left wanting more!!
I've been an Anne Rice fan for several years now. I first read 'Interview with the Vampire' about 5 years ago, after seeing the film (incidentally one of my favourites, though very different from the novel) and loved it, but for some reason I never read any more. Then about 3 years ago I found 'The Witching Hour' in a second hand book shop in Majorca and was instantly hooked. Since then I have read every one of the Mayfair trilogy and the Vampire chronicles (except Merrick) and several of her others and I can honestly say that she is the best author around (dispute that at your peril). Her novels have the power to draw you into a world that, although extraordinary, seems completely real and her ability to interweave characters and institutions between her different series' makes this reality all the more potent. Her novels are sensuous and erotic without the element of sex (I refer to her horror collection, most of which contains little sexual content, this does not apply to the various erotic novels she has published under the name's A. N. Roquelaure and Anne Rampling) creating an atmosphere and a tension that is largely beyond description.
Her knowledge of and love for her home city, New Orleans, is extremely evident from her writing. The descriptions she gives are fantastic, she creates a city that seems an almost magical paradise, and the small details she gives serve only to make the images more vivid.
She creates characters that are easy to identify with and to empathise with and who you cannot fail to love in their own right. Her ability to give each character its own unique voice (many of her novels are written from the perspectives of her characters) is fantastic, and it suceeds in bringing out the personality of each character further. And you cannot fail to love her characters, despite their faults.
There is so much more I could say about Anne Rice, but now I feel the only advice I can give is to go and read her novels, I promise you'll be glad that you did!
