Advantages: Solid build, built in ir receiver, built in display, quietness Disadvantages: not the cheapest case, instructions poor, questionable volume knob
I decided to buy this case as i was after a good looking pc case to house my media centre pc components in, and i especially liked the built in display and infrared receiver for a remote control (not included).
The components i decided to put inside this case were an abit matx motherboard ,leadtek freeview pci card, intel e2140 cpu,2x1Gb ram,500Gb hard drive and a samsung optical drive.(this case only accepts the matx form factor motherboard ... ...all the components which was pretty straight forward apart from the wires that come from the back of this cases built in display(not mentioned in the instruction manual),which i later found out have to be connected to the motherboards power headers normally reserved for the power switch thus rendering the power switch inoperable, not a problem for me as i would be using my universal logitech remote control to switch the system on and off and not ... more
I decided to buy this case as i was after a good looking pc case to house my media centre pc components in, and i especially liked the built in display and infrared receiver for a remote control (not included).
The components i decided to put inside this case were an abit matx motherboard ,leadtek freeview pci card, intel e2140 cpu,2x1Gb ram,500Gb hard drive and a samsung optical drive.(this case only accepts the matx form factor motherboard not full size atx boards)
After fitting all the components which was pretty straight forward apart from the wires that come from the back of this cases built in display(not mentioned in the instruction manual),which i later found out have to be connected to the motherboards power headers normally reserved for the power switch thus rendering the power switch inoperable, not a problem for me as i would be using my universal logitech remote control to switch the system on and off and not the power button on the case itself.
Then the pc was ready to be connected to my hdtv and surround sound, once i powered the system up and installed the operating system (windows xp media center edition) and the drivers for the on board display (on included disc). my media centre was ready to use!
And i must say this case is ideal for a living room pc as if you have the cases included cooling fans set to the lowest settings the pc is barely audible. And for looks it looks great under my samsung tv in between my ps3 and surround sound amplifier and looks more like a piece of high end A/V equipment than a pc.
The only bad things i have come across are that the volume knob on the front of the case although looking very nice does not seem to do anything apart from turn, not a problem for me as the the volume will be controlled by my surround sound system,
and the other problem is more of a niggle than a fully fledged problem is that the blue light that surrounds the power switch is very very bright and can be a bit distracting when watching something in a dark room!
So all in all if your after a quiet well built case for your living room that does not shout out "im a pc" i would highly recommend this case.
Advantages: Great looks, well built, quiet, good display unit, built in IR Receiver Disadvantages: Limited display options
Having only used budget cases to build your typical bog standard PC's before I was initially a little nervous at spending over £100 on a case. However I needn't have worried as this is well worth the money.
The case is quite heavy and feels very sturdy, it does look a little on the chunky side but this size allows you to use a full size drive and expansion cards, if you choose a slimline case you will be more limited with the components you can ... ...smart with a bright blue display and (very bright) blue ring around the power button.
The display can be customised to a limited extent through the included software to show a range of information including various system information, time and date, email status, local weather and news and media information (if using Media Centre or Win Amp). The rather large but tactile knob only controls volume and works fine with my system. The front panel also ...
