Following a number of requests to provide a list of products that contain the anti-bacteria compound Triclosan I've decided to do a little investigation and publish the list here.

I'm not looking for ratings for this though if you wish to make a comment then obviously I'd love to read them but please no ratings as this is essentially a follow-up from my previous review. Of course if you haven't already rated my previous review then I'd like to know your opinion and it can be seen here: http://www.ciao.co.uk/Anti_Bacterial_products__Review_5541047

What suprised me in compiling this list is the number of 'plastics' that include the compound Triclosan. e.g toothbrushes, childrens toys. Theres even a computer keyboard and mouse that contains it. Surely thats got to be overkill.

The list below in broken down into sections. The First Aid section I don't think should cause people concern. The compound Triclosan used in a medical scenario is obviously one where it could be argued as being essential. My problem is with the OVER-USE of this compound in areas that are not critical to the health of our families. Therefore to take Dettol as an example, I personally don't see a problem with Triclosan included as in ingrediant in the antiseptic creams but I do have a problem with it being included in their liquid soap products. Anyway I'll let people make their own minds up so have listed ALL the products that I could find including those used for first-aid.

Also some stores such as Marks and Spencers refuse to stock such products and others such as Tescos guarantee that their OWN brand products will be Triclosan free which shows how seriously the retailers are starting to take the issue.

Finally further research has suggested links with cancer because Triclosan + water containing chlorine produces chloroform which the American authorities believe is a carcinogen. I don't think the UK has chlorine its water but perhaps someone may be able to tell me otherwise. Certainly this is a secondary issue in the US and a further reason to be concerned with these products.

I'll add to this list whenever I can but for the moment, the products that the web community is aware of that contain Triclosan are:

I just researched into this and it can cause cancer and skin irritations but because it damages nerve endings it can cause little or no effect. Taken internally, even in small amounts, phenol can lead to cold sweats, circulatory collapse, convulsions, coma and death! Phenol is the group of chemicals Triclosan belongs too. Bloody awful, why do they add this into our products and plastics? x

I never realised just how many products have this scary chemical in them It's really made me think about looking at the ingredients in products in the future. Thanks for informing me.

That is indeed very helpful. I find the only thing on the list I buy regularly is Colgate Total, so will rethink this one. Thanks for the information and doing the research on our behalf. Gill :~)
