Well, you either use a mac or you don't. However if you do, it's a slippery slope into buying loads of things for your mac. There's all sorts of things you can buy, some which are trivial little things, some which aren't.
I first bought the Apple Airport Express around 6 months ago. Not entirely sure why, as my Mac Mini PC was located next to my ADSL modem and also my HiFi. So, it was definitely in the 'Trivial Purchases' Catergory.
However, now I use it with my MacBook pro, it's now in the 'Must Have' catergory.
So, why do you need one? Well, I'll tell you.
Portability: It is small, and much smaller than a regular access point. It doesn't have a ADSL modem built in, but that's not a problem for me. So, why does it need to be portable? Well, I take it everywhere with me and just plug it into people's modems and networks. For example, I travel with work, and plug this into the network cable you normally get in hotel rooms, allowing me to get wireless access in the hotel room. Also, I'm currently at my parents. I've plugged it into my mums ADSL modem and it worked first time
Airtunes: Airtunes works on iTunes on the Mac (and I think it 'may' work on XP iTunes also). You plug either an optical or analogue lead from the Airport Express into your HiFi and from iTunes you can then direct the music into your HiFi from anywhere in the house!
Printing: It also allows you to plug in a USB printer, allowing printing from anywhere in the home.
So, Mac's are famous for ease of setup. How did this compare? Well, my first attempt resulted in it going nowhere. I could access it, and set it up, but it didn't like my D-Link ADSL modem. However, it's worked on all sorts of things since.
So, using the Airport Express utility that comes with Mac OS X, you should have your Airport Express setup within a minute (and that includes wifi security!). It's really that simple and is wizard driven.
Other devices: The airport works well with both my mobile phone and my XP powered fujitsu laptop.
Problems / Issues: You can only configure this using a Mac. There's probably a way of doing it from XP but I haven't found it.
The range isn't too good either. However, this was vastly improved by spending £10 on a Griffin holder for it (available from amazon, etc).
iTunes: Well, you can only stream from iTunes at the moment. However, there's a utility available called AirFoil which allows you to use ANY mac app to transfer the music.
Support: There are many forums available for the Airport, one of which is on the apple web site
The technical details for the AirPort Express are available from the apple website. However, the important things are that it supports 802.11b and g.
Advantages: Moved music from your PC to you living room Disadvantages: None
The Apple AirPort Express is an interesting bit of kit. It's a wireless device that you can use in one of three ways [or, in fact, in all three ways].
It can create a wireless network to allow your desktop, laptop, wii, PSP etc to talk to each other. It doesn't have a built in modem, so won't connect directly to the internet, but it does have an ethernet port and so could be used with a modem to connect the network to the internet.
However, I think ... ...receiver. It has a USB port, into which you could plug a USB printer. This then makes you printer usable from any machine in the house, without having to have a dedicated network printer.
The reason I got one, though, is because it comes with a piece of software called AirTunes. This allows it to receive music streamed from any desktop or laptop [Windows or Mac] which has iTunes on it. The Express has a music output port: this allows you to use ...

Advantages: Easy to use, Small, versatile and secure Disadvantages: None
They say make this about personal experience and since this is my first wireless device this is completely personal.
I'd been looking into getting a wireless for some time but was a bit confused by it all. Plus having an iBook I wanted to make sure it was compatible. They all seem much of a muchness as things go and there's a lot of technical talk about them but I suspect it's mostly for people looking for extreme range or much more demanding use.
... ...a decent price and figured if it didn't work out or I couldn't satisfy myself regarding securing my network I'd sell it on. A sort of ten quid experiment if you like as I reckon that's the most I would lose on it if I did resell.
As it turns out this thing is simplicity itself. To coin an old USB term this thing really is plug and play. There's a little button on the bottom to push with a pen to reset it when you plug it in so that's what I did. ...

Advantages: surf the net, listen to itunes or print wirelessly Disadvantages: none to report
Here come apple again with another amazing product. This time apple have gone wireless. Introducing the airport express with itunes!
I have just purchased this airport express and have been amazed how easy it was to install and use straight out of the box. In literally 10 minutes i had written this review and printed it off with music playing in a different room no cables attached WOW! Granted, this technology was aimed at the home / small office ... ...but still its so handy especially if you want to surf the net while in the comfort of your own bed. Using 802.11g its blistering rates of speed are really amazing. Heres the only catch, many people i feel have made the mistake of buying this piece of kit expecting to get data rates of 54 megs per second, but heres the thing, you will only recieve these rates if you have an airport extreme base station and etreme card installed in your laptop. mixing ...

Advantages: Look great, easy setup, does its job excellently Disadvantages: User manual is only average, no power cable if you need it
AirPort Express with AirTunes is simply the most innovative product I have seen for years. It has three main purposes:
1. To allow you to stream your iTunes library around your house and listen to your iTunes via your home stereo. 2. To act as an Internet access point, or router, allowing you to share your broadband connection.
3. To put your printer on your wireless network.
It can also extend your existing wireless network, i.e. it is a repeater.
... ...I cannot distinguish it from a CD. The installation is very easy although the user manual is not the best I have ever seen. The product looks very cool and will crave attention from visitors to your home. The product does not require any power cables, although I found this to be annoying as my power outlet is too far away from my stereo, so the cable which links the AirPort Express to the Stereo has proven to be too short.
Overall, if you want to ...

Advantages: Wireless: broadband, filesharing, remote speaker, network extension Disadvantages: No modem, hard to fileshare from PC to Mac
I love the Airport express - it's really easy to set up, and incredibly useful/entertaining:
#Printing - quick and reliable, works with many models (however search on the net for airport express printing list) and shared between network users. Hint: when setting up the printer, what isn't explained well is that during the section on setting up a port, you'll most likely have to choose "Raw, 9100" rather than "LPR" for the protocol (sounds complex? ... ...network can play to a hifi connected to the airport express with iTunes, and you can play songs from someone else's iTunes too
#Filesharing - share files between users, though PC to Mac is not as easy
#Broadband internet - share one connection, though you do need an ethernet or wireless modem to connect to the airport express - what's great is that you can integrate it into any existing wired or wireless network, and it also works as a power booster ...
