They say make this about personal experience and since this is my first wireless device this is completely personal.
I'd been looking into getting a wireless for some time but was a bit confused by it all. Plus having an iBook I wanted to make sure it was compatible. They all seem much of a muchness as things go and there's a lot of technical talk about them but I suspect it's mostly for people looking for extreme range or much more demanding use.
In the end I got this on eBay for a decent price and figured if it didn't work out or I couldn't satisfy myself regarding securing my network I'd sell it on. A sort of ten quid experiment if you like as I reckon that's the most I would lose on it if I did resell.
As it turns out this thing is simplicity itself. To coin an old USB term this thing really is plug and play. There's a little button on the bottom to push with a pen to reset it when you plug it in so that's what I did. There's a disk with iTunes on it but you don't need drivers or any software to install.
I had a quick look at the manual (I'm good that way), plugged my internet cable into the Airport Express, plugged it into the power socket, pushed the reset button, turned on Airport on my mac and after a few seconds there it was. I connected to it and was online! Less than five minutes from getting the parcel from the postie. OK my honesty filter compels me to tell you I made a nice cuppa to sit down and read the manual so maybe five minutes is optimistic but it was amazingly quick and easy. I was drinking my tea while browsing the net and checking the security settings and I only drink tea while it's hot.
Setting the security levels and password were easy too and I now have a totally secure wireless network. It's taken a bit of time to get used to it and the range also impressed me, it works upstairs through the floor!
Personally I'd recommend this to anyone who'd like a quick, easy and efficient wireless router. I suspect it's just as easy to set up on a pc.
Thanks for reading.
R!
