A keyboard is a keyboard, right? Not these days. Computer manufacturers have wised up to Apple's rebirth after they released their original cute, colourful iMac computer. Gone are beige boxes, beige keyboards and... well, beige everything, really. Nowadays, you not only have to buy peripherals compatible with your computer, you have to colour co-ordinate them too. Of course, you may argue that the colour of the boxes and buttons on your desk is not important, and yes, you're probably right. But isn't it lovely to have an object of beauty sitting on your desk?
With an Apple, you have the option of co-ordinating everything - your monitor, your base unit, keyboard, mouse, printer, even your wireless base station. With the launch of the new iMac, eMac and iBook ranges, Apple switched from fruity colours and wild patterns to simple glacial white, and this is where the Apple Pro Keyboard comes in.
--> WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE?
Well, the Apple Pro Keyboard is distinctive for its sleek lines and gently curved base, which tilts all the keys on the top row slightly further forward than the ones at the bottom. The base is completely clear and the keys and plastic mounts are white, which gives it a really cool, clean feel. There are no multimedia keys, scrolly wheels or other extra features that you might find on PC keyboards, apart from the standard Apple volume keys. Helpfully it has both £ and Euro symbols, but unfortunately no # (hash, or poundsign to the Americans). This can be a pain when programming HTML, as I often have to switch from British to USA keyboard layouts just to enter the hash sign.
--> ANY OTHER FEATURES?
The keyboard also has two USB ports on the back, for connecting additional peripherals. This is handy if, for example, you are left handed and want to connect your mouse on the left hand side. It's also handy to connect things you don't want to have hanging out of the computer at all times, like digital cameras. However, some peripherals will not work correctly when 'chained' this way, so it's just a case of experimenting and finding the right combination.
--> HOW COMFORTABLE IS IT?
Using the keyboard is a joy. Although it is not adjustable, it is very comfortable to use, and I never get the RSI I used to suffer with PC keyboards - even the adjustable ones. The curved design makes all keys accessible and is an innovative way to tilt the unit without adding flip-down legs to the base. Keys operate with a solid 'thud' but feel heavy and well built, not cheap and tacky. We've had our Apple pro keyboard for three months now and have never had any reliability problems at all.
--> ANY CONS?
There's the hash key issue I've already mentioned, which loses the keyboard a star, and a couple of points on the 'Ease of Use' rating. A couple of other points spring to mind.
As with any computer peripheral, the Apple Pro keyboard gets a lot of use, and although it is durable, it gets dirty very easily. In a dusty flat with two cats, the specks and hairs quickly gather between the keys and end up trapped (and very visible) in the clear base part. Perhaps a computer keyboard 'hoover' would fix this - but I can say from experience that simply tapping and shaking the unit to free the much does not really make much difference.
Also, as with all Apple peripherals, it is expensive. Partly because it is a very good quality unit - partly because of the current desirability and status of Apple computers, and the fact that nobody wants to break out of their colour scheme - a white eMac, white mouse, white base-station and grey or beige keyboard would not look nice at all!
--> IS IT RECOMMENDED?
If you need to replace an older Mac keyboard, or add a keyboard to a G3 or G4 iBook, the Apple Pro keyboard is a very good choice. It's expensive, but it looks the part and I have no reason to doubt it's quality. It would look stylish with coloured or white Apple computers and will hold its value and add some desirability to your Mac if you decide to sell it on later. However, if you have kids, the keyboard is probably a bit too vulnerable to dirty sticky fingers and flakes of dust and muck.
It's also worth remembering that Apple are now adopting Bluetooth in a big way, and have now launched a wireless Bluetooth version of the keyboard. I'm not sure how useful wireless products are when they sit within wired distance of the machine anyway, but if Bluetooth interests you, or you have a dongle or BT-enabled Mac, you may want to save up another £20 and get the most up-to-date technology.
Advantages: Well made with a solid feel, Keys are easy to type Disadvantages: Not much really apart from the lack of support for Windows OS
Many people moan that apple keyboards are harder to clean... That's only because they happen to be white (instead of black). You just tend to notice dirt build-up it more, especially with the transparent sides!
It has a nice good quality heavy feel to it unlike a lot of other flimsy keyboards out there! There are 2 USB ports in the back of it - I found these perfect for using a little USB fan when it's hot :-) The keyboard itself is a gem to type ... ...ones) any Windows keyboard layout drivers for the apple keyboard. On Windows UK keyboard layout there are a few things swapped around such as @ is labelled " etc. This is a bit annoying but not exactly the end of the world!
For £20 you can't go wrong really! ...

Advantages: superb value for money, rugged body and a great OS Disadvantages: slightly higher price
I've been fascinated using the apple macbook pro and have become a n instant fan of it. The looks are sleek, body is rugged made of aluminium and the backlight on the keyboard is fantastic. Its light weight with a good portability. The booting is much faster than the windows with similar configuration. The new features such as time machine backup is just incredible. Another feature is the graphics display and the sound cardwhich is absolutely fantastic and its a great fun watching movies and videos. The Safari browser which comes with the mac os is one of the fastest browsers and is not prone to any spywares or adwares.
The Leopard mac os is just superb and there are hardly any instances of a mac crashing, unlike the windows. ...
Advantages: Comfortable, stylish optical mouse Disadvantages: Shows the dirt and can scratch easily.
I've had my eMac for a good few months now, and I love it. If you haven't seen one, it looks a bit like the famous colourful iMac, but revised to include a 17" screen. It also continues the new Mac philosophy of ice-white home computers, and comes with the AppleProKeyboard and ApplePro Mouse as standard.
I've already written an op on the Keyboard, so let's have a look at the mouse that matches it.
--> DESIGN
Mac computers have always had one button, unlike PCs that have two (or in some cases three). However, the really amazing, innovative step Apple have taken with this mouse is to do away with the idea of a button altogether. The unit is in two parts, hinged in the centre. When you push down on the front end of the mouse, the entire top surface tilts forward, so in effect, the entire mouse IS the button.
I know this ...

Apple has redefined the keyboard - not just in terms of what it does, but what it looks like. Naturally, what it feels like is a key factor too. The 108-key Apple Pro keyboard features full-size cursor keys perfect for zipping up, down and sideways in a game or on a spreadsheet. Additionally, it gives you 15 full-size programmable function keys. A single assigned keystroke may quickly launch a favorite application. The Apple Pro keyboard also comes with additional new full-sized keys for Page Up and Down, Home and End, Insert and forward Delete, plus a key for ejecting CDs or DVDs.
