As I've stated in my other reviews I'm a big apple fan, I also have an iMac and an iPod Touch. But to be honest I was a little disappointed at apple for this product.

Ease of Use

Now this being an apple product it is very easy to use, I've always thought that you could hand an apple mac to somebody who has never even heard of a computer and they could instantly be able to use it. This macbook lives up to that, even somebody with no experience of computers could do something productive on it, with its very well laid out keyboard and its easy to use large trackpad (even if mine for some reason unknown un to me, is peeling off). What's more when you press the power button very suddenly you are able to get working away or playing games, although you might find the latter pretty difficult on this particular macbook. The instruction book , all be it not very interesting, is very easy to understand and if you have no experience of computers I am sure that you'll be able to upgrade this laptops RAM or hard drive.

Looks and Design

When I first brought this macbook last October I was very impressed by the way it looked, although maybe unfortunately for me a week after I purchased it the new aluminum macbook's came out, which as they looked like my iMac I loved, however I stuck with my trusty white macbook, as the newer ones cost about £200 more, even with my student discount. Apple really did however manage to make a great looking macbook here.

Speed

Now being the basic range of laptops that apple mac (the top range being the macbook pro's) don't expect to get this to play high resource draining games, as if you do your in for a surprise. I have just about managed to play games on this, all be it not very CPU hungry ones, but even playing these the macbook struggles. Be prepared to have burnt legs if you use it on your knees for doing anything (and I mean anything) other than web browsing, I'm sitting here typing this and my legs are getting pretty toasty. I am in no way possible exaggerating just how hot this laptop gets, I wish I was. Seriously, one day I think it will melt, and the fans used to cool it couldn't be any louder if jet engines were used, it sounds like its about to take off.

Portability

This laptop is very portable I've known the battery to last a good 5 hours while using graphics software and word processing. Its also useful that it's pretty small as this means that I can fit it into my rucksack and can easily carry it around with me. Also when I'm out on the job (video editing/capturing) it proves to be of great use, if I'm only capturing low quality video.

Robustness

Now I'm very sorry to say, but this is the main point that I think lets this otherwise magnificent laptop down, as I have only had it since last October and its already covered in scratches (despite being in the case most of the time) the plastic also feels cheap hence the plastic bag reference. I have also found that the trackpad is starting to peel off, and the sides of the laptop can easily be pressed in (they are very weak). One other this is that when the laptop is closed, the plastic edges around the screen rub against the keyboard side and the plastic is now very shiny as it is being rubbed away. But wait there's a bit more, The first time I turned the battery lock on the bottom, it crack, it shows really how poorly this macbook is built.

Value for Money

Hrmm, this is a tough one, hrmm, I guess being what it is (a mac) its pretty good, although compared to non-macs its pretty ridiculously priced. You could get a windows laptop thats ten times better. I would recommend, however, that you go for the newer aluminum macbook pro, I have heard that it is very well built, just like they used to be.

Now for the Specs '

  • 13.3" Screen (1280 x 800)

  • 160GB HDD
  • 2GB ram (Maximum of 4GB)

So nice to see a "gadget review" on here with original content. Some of this is uncanny - I inherited my dad's MacBook when he got a new PowerBook and he was just saying the other day that the MacBook isn't as good as the PowerBook. That thing you added about the fan being loud is really true - sometimes I'm scared mine's going to blow up! (I'm getting a PowerBook next time . . .)
