A lot of people talk about how great macbook pro's are. I have one and their average in my opinion. It all depends on what you want to use it for. If you want something that will keep your organised and allow you to surf the web, watch films and perform the most remedial tasks then i'd say go for it. But for that £1000+ price tag you often wonder what your paying for. Like most apple products you pay for the name and the look; nothing more than a fashion statement at the best of times. The battery life is absolutely terrible and it heats up very quickly if you use it a lot. Also expect to go through your fair share of chargers and gadgets; what you'll really end up spending is £1300. The operating system is great and has many little settings that you'll fall in love with; Its like a fantastic car with a rubbish engine. I'm an artist and this machine does not have the power that I need, my pc cost me half the price of my mac. I'd shop around for another laptop unless someone else is paying for it; in which case i'd say get it. One thing that apple does have over most other machines, is that when the battery goes flat the machine starts up exactly where you work and you don't use your work; love this feature.
