Having recently converted to Apple, I was just getting used to the single button and no scroll button on my wireless mouse. And then hey presto Apple announces a two-button mouse with a scroll wheel. No doubt under pressure from the legions of apple "halo effect" convertees, who having said goodbye to windows and hello OSX, felt they still needed the comfort of a two button mouse.
So what is it like?
First of all I have to say is it is good to have two buttons again! Pulling up the menus of functions using the right click is useful. I had got used to not having that function, but it is definitely quicker with the two buttons.
Onto the mouse itself. Packaging as usual was MACool. It's a joy to buy and a joy to open. Mouse inside, some instructions and installation disk.
Plug it in and insert the disk. First problem you need OSX Tiger for all the functions to work. I am still on Panther. It will work on Windows 2000 or XP, if you want to pretend you are macool but cant quite overcome your windows attachment. Don't think all the functions work under Windows?
Mouse connection is USB. Cord length is about a metre so plenty long enough (for me anyway).
The mouse is mouse size? Fine in my hands and not uncomfortable to use. Underneath has red light thingy, so no ball to clean! Sorry to be untechnical. Two side buttons which will only work with Tiger. Nice domed top made of shiny white plastic with small apple logo and the tiny small scroll ball (button).
The clever bits. The mouse does not have two separate distinguishable buttons on the top. Your two fingers will sit either side of the scroll ball. Push with the left finger and you click as normal. Click the right finger and it pulls up the menus. So the mouse can tell which side you are pressing rather than have definite individual keys. Does the description sound ok? I have only one or two instances in the last month of ownership, where it has mistakenly assumed the wrong click. I have used it on some games and it works fine.
The ball: Small rubbery texture scroll ball. This allows you to scroll down those web pages up, down, left, right, basically in any direction you choose (360 degrees). Quite cool really although most of the web pages I access do not need scrolling left to right, but I guess if you are working on large graphics and you want to scroll around the page then this function will come into its own. Not sure what happens when the ball gets dirty over time, which I feel sure will happen with your dirty finger pushing it around. Seems to be no access to clean. Feels a bit weird to begin with but you get used to the speed of scrolling in no time.
Side buttons, cant really describe these, as I haven't used them. I guess they will come into their own with Tiger. You seem to be able to customise the functions, so I am sure it will be useful. Overall I am pleased with it. Works well on a daily basis, no complaints from the wife. Gaming is easier and using the mouse in all those cool MAC applications is easier with the two-button function. Looks cool on my MAC mouse pad! I paid just under 40 pounds for mine (Overseas) in the local MAC shop.
The only upgrade I would like to see is a cordless version, I am sure that will come in time.
I would recommend upgrading if you are struggling with the old single button and you hanker for you two buttons. In fact all new iMacs ship with the mighty mouse so no problem in deciding there.
In fact if you goto the apple website I see they are doing a really cool deal for mighty mouse at the minute, 899 pounds complete with a free iMac! Cant be bad!

I always used to wonder why Apple thought their users couldn't cope with more than one mouse button - now you're telling me they've gone and given you 4 buttons plus a scroller thingy?!?! I'd imagine it comes with headache tablets too ;-) Good review. Sam.
