20 times more sensitive to optical features than other optical mice.
TIny central scroll button allows 360 scrolling - up/down left/right and diagonal.
Touch-sensitive top shell - feels like older one-click Apple mice but by clicking the left part of the shell you get a left click, by clicking the right part of the shell you get a right click.
Force-sensing side buttons - you have two buttons on each side of the mouse you can configeure to do whatever you want.
MY GRIPE:
I suffer all kinds of aches and pains from long term keyboard and mouse use. Trying to work all these little buttons on a tiny little mouse is very difficult and agonizing for me. I had so much trouble getting to grips with this thing I could easily click something I didn't mean to or scroll off to one side of a document I was trying to read. Maybe at 32 I am getting too old for modern technology but I just want a simple comfortable mouse and I can get the functions this mouse offers by other means. I fear younger mouse users might love this mouse at first but could develop symptoms like mine with prolonged use.
I have to use computers everyday at work and I am slowly developing all those nasty repetive strain and carpal tunnel symptoms I have been dreading. If this means nothing to you then I will put it in simpler terms - I have tried to improve my posture and my technique but using a keyboard and a mouse everyday is starting to hurt.
Where I used to work we had a suite of old Apple macs with the older Apple Pro mouse. These were nice - a big chunky piece of acrylic that really filled your hand. I never suffered any problems when using these. You could rest your hand down on them when you weren't using them and the way they use the whole top of the mouse as the button meant you weren't putting excess stress on one part of the hand. They didn't have the right click functionality of other mice but you could achieve this by using a key on the keyboard while using the mouse. For me with my aching limbs this was a good compromise. The size and smoothness of these mice made them ideal for work requiring accuracy and steady mouse movement.
Some people weren't happy with these - mice made for use with IBM PCs had more functionality - right click for extra features, scroll buttons and side buttons for extra features such as zoom and magnification. I guess it is for these reasons Apple wanted to design a new mouse with as many features as possible.
One thing to be aware of when chosing a mouse is that you can often use another companies mouse with left and right click buttons and get that functionality on a mac. I sometimes used a cheap and chunky two click mouse with my iBook when I got tired of pressing a keyboard key everytime I wanted to see a menu. There are much cheaper options than the Mighty Mouse out there and if you can try them out with a mac before purchase you might find a better match for you.
So along comes the Mighty Mouse with a whole load of extra functionality. If functionality is all you are looking for and you have supple young hands then Mighty Mouse could be a powerful tool. But at what cost in the future?
I had to use these when using the internet cafe in an Apple Store - the other thing I noticed about them is that the little scroll button gets covered in human skinny gunk that works its way down the little hole it is set in. Apple might possible give you a replacement but knowing Apple spare parts are never cheap.
if you really want a Mighty Mouse be aware that the wireless version is now available.
I would recommend you buy up some Apple Pro Mice while you still can.
