My powerbook 1400c(which I still have)was a great landmark for both Apple and I. For me, it was my first laptop, my first Macintosh, my first internet connected computer and it helped me through all my GCSE coursework.

I managed to buy it off of a teacher at my school for £800 with a printer, PC card modem (28.8k)Zip drive and a host of Mac related books and CDs, because the School was going PC (just as I was going Mac), and he had no more use for it, despite thinking that it was a great computer. This was a great deal, as he had bought just the Computer under 2 years before for about £4000 (havent laptops come down in price!)

For Apple, it marked a new smaller form factor, and was their first laptop to include an internal CD drive. Its specs were: 133Mhz 603e processor, 16Mb ram (upgraded to 48Mb), 6 speed CD, 11.1 inch screen (800x600, with no 3D accelleration at all!), and 1Gb HD. Its ports were simple, just with power, sound in, out, serial, SCSI, and 2 PC card slots. It didn't even have a monitor out.

Having said all this, it was a great computer in its day, running fast enough, using the internet, with a good Active matrix screen and the best keyboard that I have ever used (on any computer -lap or desk). There was a good side to the small screen - small footprint.

Reliability was also excellent. Its predecessor, the 5300, while being in some respects more advanced, was unreliable. Not so with the 1400 - I even know of one guy whose 1400 survived when his office was wrecked by a hurricane!

Don't expect it to run the newest software, though. I have found that with the limited ram and processing power, Mac OS 8.1 is probably the best solution, though I dare say that it will run 9 at a crawl.

I would still recommend this computer if you want a very cheap and basic solution for word processing and the like ( I have an iBook though :-))
