I was recently asked to set up a small business with 3 new macs on a small network on a mediocre budget. And to cut the long "what to buy debate" story short, we plumped with 2 second hand G3's and an imac. If we had bought brand new computers they would all have had to be the most basic imacs and this wasn't really suitable (as 17" screens were needed). The blue and white G3 is, in my opinion a great 2nd hand buy. They are being sold off in the bucket load at the moment by people upgrading to G4 and are still very stylish and fairly fast computers with the added advantage of being very upgradable and therefore ther obsolete half-life should extend longer than imacs sold with similar specs at the same time (and will last a LOT longer than a PC bought at the same time). G3's have built-in 10/100 ethernet which makes simple networks a joy to set up in no time at all. They have 3 PCI slots for expandability and future upgrade cards. If installed with one of Apples developed and "stable systems (8.6, 9.0.4 and possibly 9.1) the G3 should be a joy to use. They don't have firewire, but a firewire pci card can be obtained farily cheaply and if you are going to need firewire, you may well want to get a faster computer that can do firewire justice. Beware of G3's without internal Apple 56k modems, as Apple will no longer sell internal modems, only replace damaged ones. Look around, get the highest Mhz you can (350 or 400, avoid the 300 if poss.) and make sure you compare prices and those little extras they're including.
Advantages: Macs are brilliant, although my opinion may be biased! Disadvantages: Getting hold of software can be a bind if you're in a hurry to play with the latest games
I am a Mac Fanatic, using the machines both at work and at home and very rarely have any problems, but I must issue warning to all considering the purchase of a second hand MAChine - check out the prices and availability of memory for the model you're looking at.
For business use, I have a beige G3 tower, loaded to the gills with RAM and as I haven't had to pay for it, I have no complaints - seriously - getting extra RAM for these machines is NO ... ...a problem and cost is comparative to that of a PC user to upgrade), but at home I have an ageing 8500/120 which I have been forced to upgrade to OS9 in order to run a game for my kids (OS9 requires 32Mb of RAM alone) and considering I only started out with 32Mb of RAM, I have had to investigate the damage to my pocket to put things to rights memory-wise. Imaging my shock and dismay when I started surfing to find the best prices (having got a ball ...

...been the flagship of the Apple Macintosh range. Aimed at the commercial sector or the high-end home user who has money to burn and mates to impress. Fortunately for us, the price of old computers tumbles with time and these late 90's computers can be found on eBay for around £50 plus postage. This does reflect their near obsolescence, but the great news is: they can be very easily upgraded with parts from the same source (eBay)! There is no on-board SCSI on these machines, but it too can be added by inserting a PCI SCISI card, which might also be the basis of fast SCSI RAID if you wanted to investigate that possibility.
The standard optical drive is a CD-ROM/DVD-ROM combo. So some sort of CD or CD/DVD writer is probably desirable. The options are somewhat limited as you need Apple ROM onboard in order to boot from CDs or ...

...is to do with processors. Apple have recently made the switch to using Intel instead of the IBM PowerPCs, and some new models like the laptop MacBook and the Mac Mini have already been released with the new chips. There is probably a new PowerMac on the way, although I have no idea how far away it is. Let me just explain what the difference will mean.
For a start, the new PowerMac will be a general improvement upon the old one, the processors will ... ...software currently being developed for Apple (and everything developed recently) will run on both types of machine, but if you already use a Mac and you have some older software you don't want to lose, you probably don't want to change processor. Also, all software developed in the future will still run on old Macs, so don't worry that if you buy one now it will become out of date very soon.
If you want to wait, then there will probably be a new ...

Apple is one of the greatest worldwide companies' that exists today, releasing amazingly creative items on the market such as the iPod nano and the MacBook which hit the sales like a storm. You are all probably thinking this is amazing but just wait until you see the specifications on this beauty - your jaw will drop right down to the floor as did mine. I don't really understand specifications fully as I am sure the majority of you don't either but I do my best to translate that foreign language. "I don't actually own one ...

Advantages: faster than predecessors (Performa 6400 etc) Disadvantages: not enough improvement and now superceded by iMac & G4
Having purchased my G3 new in Xmas '98, I was keen to get the speed and power I'd longed for. I've always had Macs (12 years plus) and worked with them, but never been able to afford anything big or fast. This new machine promised to be a SIGNIFICANT increase in processing speed and sheer "MEAT" - however it has consistently failed to live up to it's expectations.
Firstly; it has ALWAYS been "buggy" - whatever O/S I install (gone from 8.0 thru' ... ...defaults, minor directory damage, un-accessible data etc)
Secondly: I don't appear to have gained much ACTUAL speed, despite going from 166Mhz processor to 275Mhz
Also: it is VERY difficult to keep running "on top form" - I am a keen "amateur mechanic" and like my machines to be tuned to maximum performance, but it has always been hard to make any improvements, I seem to spend my time catching up with things which have gone wrong.
Don't get me ...

Advantages: Fast, Upgradable, Reliable, All In One Unit Disadvantages: The Colour and Patern
This is one very nice system which i found in a skip. I still have it as i found out that it was rare.
Anyway best get on with this otherwise i will not be going to bed tonight.
The iMacG3 Flower Power came out in early 2001 which was the fastest ever AppleMac of its kind. Whilst other companies were working on the new 1GHz processors from Intel and AMD mac was not dominating the market.
At the same time of the iMac Flower Powerapple also made some more casings to fit the specification of the main system.
Their names are as follows:
Indigo
Blue
Dalmation
The Indigo casings were a thought from previous years.
The Blue casings were upgrade from the original Bondi Blue.
Anyway thats the history of the iMac out of the way. The reason you want to read this review is because its about an iMac Flower Power.

Advantages: Works wonderfully well and is very convenient Disadvantages: Very expensive if bought at RRP, plus can produce some unwanted surprises.
computers sit at my desk. It?s so manoeuvrable I hadn?t imagined the possibilities.
I knew I wanted an AppleMac (whether it be a laptop or a desktop) as I am study a Degree in Photography and Video Media. For those of you who know AppleMacs you will agree that for any kind of Graphic?s work the Mac is the tops.
I know that for all you PC users the words Apple and Mac are two you never want to hear together; I get it all the time. ?Why are you using one of them, what?s wrong with a PC?!?
Well I don?t have a problem with PC but as far as I?m concerned the only reason you don?t like Mac?s is because you haven?t tried one, either that or your scared that if you do have a go you will have to admit your wrong. However for what I needed I?m afraid that the AppleMacPowerBook G3 was the best available.
