Advantages: Cheap, Expandable, Stylish
Disadvantages: No firewire port, as time goes on clock speed may be too slow

...firewire justice. Beware of G3's without internal Apple 56k modems, as Apple will no longer sell internal modems, only replace damaged ones. Look around, get the highest Mhz you can (350 or 400, avoid the 300 if poss.) and make sure you compare prices and those little extras they're including. ... Read review

Second Hand Macs and memory
Review of Apple Power Mac G3 - PPC G3 266 MHz by whyted

Advantages: Macs are brilliant, although my opinion may be biased!
Disadvantages: Getting hold of software can be a bind if you're in a hurry to play with the latest games

I am a Mac Fanatic, using the machines both at work and at home and very rarely have any problems, but I must issue warning to all considering the purchase of a second hand MAChine - check out the prices and availability of memory for the model you're looking at. For business use, I have a beige G3 tower, loaded to the gills with RAM and as I haven't had to pay for it, I have no complaints - seriously - getting extra RAM for these machines is NO ...
...a problem and cost is comparative to that of a PC user to upgrade), but at home I have an ageing 8500/120 which I have been forced to upgrade to OS9 in order to run a game for my kids (OS9 requires 32Mb of RAM alone) and considering I only started out with 32Mb of RAM, I have had to investigate the damage to my pocket to put things to rights memory-wise. G3 - affordable power or misfit?

Advantages: faster than predecessors (Performa 6400 etc)
Disadvantages: not enough improvement and now superceded by iMac & G4

Having purchased my G3 new in Xmas '98, I was keen to get the speed and power I'd longed for. I've always had Macs (12 years plus) and worked with them, but never been able to afford anything big or fast. This new machine promised to be a SIGNIFICANT increase in processing speed and sheer "MEAT" - however it has consistently failed to live up to it's expectations. Firstly; it has ALWAYS been "buggy" - whatever O/S I install (gone from 8.0 thru' ...
...defaults, minor directory damage, un-accessible data etc) Secondly: I don't appear to have gained much ACTUAL speed, despite going from 166Mhz processor to 275Mhz Also: it is VERY difficult to keep running "on top form" - I am a keen "amateur mechanic" and like my machines to be tuned to maximum performance, but it has always been hard to make any improvements, I seem to spend my time catching up with things which have gone wrong. One Bad Apple...

Advantages: Industry standards
Disadvantages: Too many to list - stress is a killer!

...that won't co-exist with the Apple Talk network right down to the mouse that gives me a sore wrist. Giving it a nice colourful plastic shell isn't enough. Someone should sit down with Apple and their software partners and give them all a stern lecture on usability. They've got a captive audience of Microsoft-haters who are going to use these machines no matter (almost) what. Don't take 'em for granted. As for me - I'm going to take one helluva lot ...
