The iMac is not just a computer, it is a piece of art in its own right, as with all apple products they have spent long amounts of time designing their machine for functionality and fashion.
overall it functions very well, its speed is above average for graphical tasks which would easily put stress on the average PC, its operating system is completely backup up by its hardware and over time macs don't age significantly like pc's
The iMac has 3 USB ports on the back and 2 Built into its mighty keyboard, this is a great addition to the keyboard and can be great for keeping a usb stick in. it has firewire support of 600mb/s to support ultra high speed external hard drives. on the back also are well place microphone and headphone sockets. the screen is clear and crisp on all software and the operating system looks great, it displays high res of 1920 X 1280 and can easily multi task.
Mac OSX is a great addition to macs firmware and with frequent updates and great stock software it can easily fulfill all basic functions. because its operating system deals with graphic and sound in such a way it integrates them into its great looking operating system. it is also able to deal with highly advances softwares which maybe computers will find hard to run. it produces little in the way of caches which are cleared often and if the mac is not on a servespace should take a while to fill
I would say a mac would suit anyone but is mainly aimed at the upper market and professionals who would find their job harder with a pc, its design is great and although having no base unit it works extremely well, its metal shell makes it shiny and its glossy finish screen looks great off or on. the keyboard and mouse work well with a very good scroller ball, although this all looks great its hugely unergonomical and can get painful to use. luckily alternatives are avalible.

Value for money is average, the decision you have to make is, do you like mac and do i find it easier than windows, the answer for me is.. yes i like mac, but i wouldn't dish out 1100 pounds for one. my pc suits me as it is.
The stability of the system is bad when connected to a server but when independent will stay very stable. crashing is rare but more common than windows xp so best to save your work. If you have oodles of cash then obviously it could be worth investing or at least trying out but for the mid level market its probably best to stick with pc's
