When Apple announced the new iPad 2, it also announced that it was going to release a series of smart covers for the it. These come in both polyurethane and leather, and the model I bought was the black leather one, as the polyurethane ones only come in a series of colours I believe don't look that good, such as bright orange and blue. In comparison the more subdued leather covers looked better but at a higher cost.

The cover does what it says on the tin, protecting the screen from scratches. It doesn't however cover the whole device and only covers the front glass screen. It attaches magnetically to the device and very easy to fit, by simply moving it close to the side of the iPad. It also functions as a stand of sorts, by folding into a triangle and raises one edge of the iPad. This sounds good but in practice, I don't feel it raises it enough for my liking.

The one thing I do like however, is that the cover functions as book cover of sorts. As you open the cover, the iPad immediately awakens and unlocks, making it ready to use. It's function I never knew about when I bought the cover and it's one which I really like.

The big issue is the cost. The polyurethane cover costs £35 but the leather one is much more expensive at £59. That's very expensive for a case that only covers the front of the device.

So Apple's smart cover does what it does very well. It looks smart, is easily attached and functions brilliantly. it's well built too. But it is very expensive for what it is. There may be better value cases about, but I do like Apple's more expensive product.
