My husband bought me my iphone 3gs for Christmas, I had dropped plenty of hints and it paid off for once! I think its about time I reviewed it now.
Availability- I bought my iphone 3gs from a o2 shop (pay as you go) for £440, I suggest that you look around for the best deal, I found it depends what network you want effects the price, there are great contract deals available in most phone shops. Apples official website sells them and great accessories for the phone too.
Getting started- The box is small but holds everything you need to get started, once you have the phone out the box you will find the small instruction manual, its very basic and helps you set the phone up. I took the sim card from the box and spent 15 mins trying to figure out where the heck it was meant to go, I read the instructions and realised there was a small metal pin which helps to insert to the top of phone (not in the back)! You need to open a apple itunes account using your computer, you need to do this to sync and download data to set the phone up, it comes with a usb cable to download the data to your phone. Once that's completed turn your phone on and away you go!
LOTS OF FEATURES
Touch screen- The iphone touch screen is amazing, I have previously had touch screen phones but nothing compares to apple touch screen, Its sensitive and quick, it does not have a time delay when you touch it. You can touch or use your finger to slide the screen or shake it. The screen displays images very clearly.
Making phone calls- its very simple you touch the dial key pad and type the number or can be done via your contact lists, you can put it onto speaker phone which I use a lot dare I say when driving! Phone calls have excellent sound quality and as I said easy to use.
Txting- I love txting on the iphone, it has a qwerty keyboard and makes it fast and easy to text, the keyboard is sensitive and takes a while to get used to at first, like most phones you can picture msg and video msg too.
Mail- you can send and access your email accounts with a touch of the screen, its very hand if your on the move. It has hot mail, yahoo or you can add your own email account like I did as I am with bt yahoo. It really makes a difference to see your emails as if you accessed them via your computer.
Maps- the phone has a built in sat nav, yes a sat nav! It runs off of google maps, its easy to use, I did not think I would use it but have found I use it a lot. Like most sat navs you type in an address or postcode and it gives you directions to where you want to go.
Apps- Any smart phone wouldn't be complete without apps! Like I tunes you have the option on the touch screen to view the app store, there are thousands of apps to choose from, some are fun and some very practable. There are many free apps like facebook and banking apps, I cant live without the facebook app and also have a book reader app which I can download books to and read them off my phone, it comes in handy when you work nightshift. Apps are free or cheap, start from 59p.
Itunes- On the touch screen is the itunes store, it takes you directly to the sore where you can browse music, videos or buy or rent films. You can click on the songs and vids to get a short preview of it. It syncs what ever you have bought to your apple account as well as your phone. You can activate an Itunes voucher on your phone or set it up so anything you buy comes off your bank account. I prefer to buy a voucher because its so easy to click and buy and end up forgetting what you have spent.
Camera- the iphone 3gs camera is 3 mp, good enough for a mobile phone, it takes crystal clear photos and gives you lots of options to zoom and effects are endless. You can also use the camera to make videos, yet again the videos are crystal clear and have top sound quality. You also have the option to upload your vids straight onto youtube! I'm not a big youtube fan and have not tried this feature out yet but may give it ago soon.
Safari- safari is apples web browsing engine, just like internet explorer and google on most computers, safari has fast searching speeds for a mobile phone and has good results to, I am a google bug but got used to using safari fairly quick.
Iso 4.1- this is the software that lets you multi task, you can listen to music and send emails or text at the same time, its very useful and lets you download updates for software.
Ipod- I love this feature, it saves me carrying a ipod and mobile phone in my bag because its already built into my mobile phone! You can store thousands of music, vids and pic on it and also download pod casts at a click of a button and depending on what memory you have on the phone. So far I have 5000 tunes downloaded on it and tones of room for more. I find the phone to have excellent sound quality with no interference when listening to music with my official apple earphones.
What I really think?
I have fell in love with my iphone 3gs, its the first apple product I have ever owned and am very impressed with apple. It really is a smart phone but you don't have to be a technology geek to operate it, if I can work it anyone can. The phone keeps me amused for hours a day with all the apps and listening to my ipod while commuting by train to work. I work nightshift and play the games and browse facebook at work (while on my break)! I love the camera to and have used almost all the main features of the phone.
My only two greivences with the phone is 1. The battery life is awful, I need to charge it everyday but I do use the phone a lot. With it being a smart phone I feel apple could have improved the battery. 2. my second complaint is the price over £400 for the phone was steap! And a few months after I bought the phone they bring out the iphone 4!
The above was a little moan not a huge problem! I will be investing in the iphone 4 soon once I save enough money. It is small, light and packed with the best software and technology. I also would like to say how helpful I found the apple website its packed with helpful trouble shooting advice for the iphone 3gs and the customer service line was top class and helpful.
