I had my Iphone 3GS 8gb for years and it only recently broke due to me not being gentle with it and dropping it quite a few times so the case ending up cracking. However I don't think this is so much a problem with Iphones, well not from my experience anyway as I think all phones are very prone to breaking if they get dropped, why I always tried to keep mine it is protective case but unfortunately it wasn't in it once or twice when it got dropped. However I would advise anyone getting an iphone to do what I should have done and always make sure the phone is in a case as even if you don't drop it the back and the screen can get easily marked and scratched.

The phone is very useful to have and has a wide range of apps available, some you have to pay for but there are quite a few good free ones. I generally relied on the spotify app as I'm a commuter student so I needed music to get me through long bus journeys and a paid app which says all the bus timetable information for any particular bus stop. But you can find an app for pretty much everything and every topic you can think off. So it's way more than just a phone for talking and texting, and is very useful to have when your on the go, as you can check your emails, check documents, catch up on the internet and all sorts. I was very upset when mine broke and it too a couple of days to actually get used to not just being able to go in my pocket and grab my phone whenever I needed to find something out,

When it comes to the camera and stuff, I think it's a decent enough camera for a phone, but that's cause I rarely used it as I have a digital camera so just completely ignored the phones camera. The sound quality is good, and the reception on O2 network was good and never had any real trouble with the phone apart from the battery length, but it's okay for a smart phone battery just remember to take the charger with you if your going to be using it quite a lot, but if your not using it so much then in my experience it was able to hold a charge for a day or so.

I personally believe the Iphone 3gs is a great phone, and that the Iphone 4 doesn't have any particularly stand out feature that make it any better, so for me I would choose the cheaper option of the Iphone 3gs if your buying the handset and not getting it free on a contract.
