iPhone finally arrived on the UK market on the 9th November although not with the same amount of media attention it received in the U.S. it was still popularly accepted by the UK market. I bought mine on the 19th November for £269. This seems expensive but you get a digital camera, ipod and phone all rolled in to one with iphone + internet browsing and e-mail capability, also included are elements of a personal organiser (diary and notepad). The main feature of the phone is the touch screen technology which operates everything. Without boring you with technical detail I will tell you what I got from iphone. There are 17 screens (buttons you can push on the face of the camera.) The 4 on the bottom horizontal strip are the phone, e-mail, internet browsing and i-pod. There 13 buttons on top from left to right in 3 rows of 4 +1 are , SMS text, Calendar, Photos, camera, utube, stocks, maps, weather, clock, calculator, notes, settings, itunes.
SMS text is very pleasant to use. A
virtual keyboard allows you to type very fast and an automatic spell checker is in operation. To write a message you simply touch an icon in the top right hand corner and a keyboard appears allowing you to write your message. Your messages can be stored under contact addresses which appear on the screen you enter when you first press the sms icon. Messages can be deleted by pressing the edit button. When you register with O2 you will receive e-mails from O2 inviting you to visit the website to find out what else O2 has to offer. There are text alerts for sport and entertainment you can receive for extra money and you will also be invited to use your own web page for free to store photos and e-mails. Broadband is also available on special offer to new O2 users.
The Calendar is also very novel and the touch screen technology is very nice to use. You can record future events and these will appear in Todays schedule. You can also view the monthly calendars and add stuff for the year around. You press a button in the top right hand corner and a screen comes up allowing you to add an event. You can include the start and end time, an alert and a repeat function. You can also add detailed notes so this becomes a very powerful little personal organiser if used properly.
Next on the right is the photo library. This records photos taken with the camera. You can also set up mini slide shows from 5 to 20 seconds with ripple and fade effects. This is set in the setting section further down.
Fourth on the right on the top row is the camera. You can take horizontal or vertical pictures by pressing the touch screen button. All very nice so far.
The second row down has Utube as the first icon. Next is stocks. I have not used either so I could not honestly say which each one does. For Utube you need wifi connection and the stocks have some very nice looking graphs and figure but I do not know how to use them.
Next is the A to Z. This is a very powerful little tool that allows you to view streetmaps from cities all around the world. You can also enter directions in the form of notes about journeys between 2 points so you can keep them for reference.
The fourth icon in the second row is the weather guide. This is a stylish spreadsheet that gives you a week long prediction of weather temperatures for whichever city you choose to enter in the search engine. I have tried this out for various cities around the world and it is very easily shown around to other people.
First in the last row is the clock. This enables you to view the time in any city in the world and shows a clock on the screen of your chosen city (up to 4 cities at a time). There is also a stopwatch and a lap record timer for up to 4 laps (very useful in the gym). You can also set a timer or alarm with a variety of sounds , choose from 24 including a robot and a duck.
Next is the calculator, I have used it, it is very handy and easy to use.
After that check out the notes. This is another powerful little tool that allows you to type in notes using a keyboard. Put a header on each note , there does not seem to be any specific limit. Another addition to your personal organiser tools.
Next is the settings icon. This is the tool used for setting up your phone, sound, brightness, wifi, ipd, photos and safari. It will take experience of using the phone to decide what is right for you. There is a good choice of graphic screensavers. Battery usage is shown, mine reads standby time 1day 12hours and usage 2 hours 41 minutes. Memory used is also shown.
Last of the 13 is the itunes section. You can use this for browsing the itunes store and loading music on to the ipod.
The last 4 icons on the bottom row are for the phone , email, safari and ipod.
The phone is very easy to use. It has 5 controls. Favourites, Recents, Contacts, keypad and voicemail. All functions are self explanatory, very easy to use from the beginning. When you use the phone another screen comes up with voice/speaker options. The phone lights up with a green "call" icon or red "end call". There is also an icon for contacts, hold, keypad and add call. The last allows the facility of "conference calling".
For e-mail you require wi-fi connection but I have not yet tried this out. A range of networks is listed ,google,AOL,Y!Mail and mac
Next is safari the internet browser. I have used this to browse wikipedia,BBC and our own CIAO. It is slow at first but quite well organised once you get the hang of it. For more advanced browsing such as videos and media stuff you will need wi-fi.
Last is the Ipod. This shows the songs you have downloaded in different forms, by playlist, artist, album or all by song. You can thumb through the albums, Press an icon to get the album or song and then press again to play the song. Also you can pause the play button if needed.
When you buy the phone first check that you have a friend who can register it for you on itunes or at an internet café if you do not have your own itunes account. The phone must be registered within 30 days of opening the account. It does not come with a case, I bought a leather one for £20.00. Charging is easy and the fingertip instructions are easy to follow to start you off. I think it is good value for money considering the innovative technology and all of the features you get with it. It is neither a mini laptop or a PDA but definitely a good combination of useful organisational and communication tools. I definitely recommend it. Is it value for money? Well you get a mobile phone, camera, ipod, surf engine, and all the other stuff I mentioned above so I will say yes. It also looks stylish in silver and black and the sound quality is good, it comes with earphones also.
