I purchased an iPod Nano for my niece last Christmas, and I must admit that I am thinking of getting one for myself, as well.
At 2GB, this unit actually holds up to 400 mp3s at a quality of 128kbps or 192kbps (this number refers to the sample rate and the higher this number, the better the quality, but 128kbps is considered CD-quality and 320 is considered studio quality). The iPod Nano also holds pictures, but even though the screen is fairly good, it is a bit tiny for use with pictures.
Out of the really small box, this unit comes with the trademark white earbuds and a USB cable to connect to the pc.
First impression of the iPod itself is that it is really tiny, and the screen may give you the urge to grab your glasses (and do not resist that urge, believe me). The iPod must be charged via the included USB cable from your computer
before it can be of any use.
However, my immediate complaint is the lack of included software - my niece does not have internet access at her apartment, and in order to get anything on the iPod, you require iTunes - which she had to go online to download. But, once downloaded, the iPod is recognised by the pc and everything can proceed without a hitch.
If you are on a tight budget and aren't the fussiest person in the world, then everything you need for the iPod is included in the box. Sound reproduction with the included earbuds (I don't know why they don't call them earphones anymore) is very good - and damned LOUD - so be careful with the volume control. Battery charges last a couple of days (if you use it almost constantly like my teenaged niece), but for me, it lasted almost an entire week without the need to charge - but once you plug it in to update the song listing, it begins to charge automatically.
Unlike my Sony PSP, it is very easy to lose track of in your pockets if you disconnect the headphones and put it away when not in use. It also is NOT a magnet for dust and fingerprints - although I did take the precaution of placing a screen guard on it, just in case. While (because of its size) it does not feel like the most durable gadget in your hand, it actually is very handy and can take some blows (my niece is not the neatest or careful person out there) and it has had its share of near-death experiences, and is still going strong.
There are also a couple of games included, but I personally cannot handle looking at such a TINY screen for such a long time to play solitare or whatever may have been included with your unit.
However, one should read the operating manual (which is also NOT included with the unit) at apple.com - the operating temperatures are about room temperature - so if it happens to remain in your outer coat pocket, it may literally freeze and refuse to respond, and because there is no dedicated power button, you will find that it takes quite some time to regain control of the unit.
Thereafter, I was able to see just how much Steve Jobs can brag on Apple's product line. Since my niece registered the iPod online, they were able to tell the age of the iPod and how long it was in use, and if it was past its warranty date. Once a proof of purchase was shown, everything went very smooth.
iTunes however, is not the friendliest of software applications out there. It tries to convert all your music into either mp3s or iPod proprietary format to copy onto it, and if you have downloads from various other websites, or ripped CDs to WMA or OGG audio formats, it may not accept the media for loading onto the iPod. Then, there are the issues with copyright and intellectual property - I agree that the artists who created the media for our purposes should be paid for their work, but I disagree with the way in which the mediahouses distribute their work and make me have to suffer through the file format wars - some media when downloaded with iTunes cannot be shared with other devices and I find it a bit annoying when I purchased the song for whatever price and cannot play it on my Sony PSP or PS3.
All in all, it is a very neat and attractive device. Its lack of printed documentation and included software wasn't a big obstacle, but it should be considered that not everyone has access to broadband internet to get iTunes as soon as possible. In terms of usage, this should be considered primarily an mp3 player and not a gaming device or a picture viewer because of its tiny screen. But, it is well worth the money for a portable mp3 player.
