The Apple iPod has quickly become an iconic and essential accessory in modern day life. Whilst there are other good mp3 players such as the Creative Zen and the Sony Walkman, the Apple is continually considered to be the best and biggest around. The iTunes store complimenting it’s player by offering a wide array of media from music, video, games and again with accepted “Apple-speak”; Podcasts. All in all, the Apple iPod is pretty much the beacon of portable music. So what sets this particular model, the iPod Video 30GB 5th generation apart from both it’s competitors and other iPod models
The biggest difference from other iPod players is the video capabilities which allow you to store and watch your favourite TV shows, films and video Podcasts. Even though there are iPods available with larger storage space, my 30GB hard drive seems to cope fine with everything I’ve thrown at it which is a considerable amount. Being portable, the screen size is obviously not enormous but then again, you can see how big the iPod is, why would this surprise you? More important is the clarity and colour of the picture which are both excellent and there is also skipping during play. You may feel that there is still something missing when watching a movie, but for watching episodes of your favourite comedy on a long journey, the iPod really does supply the goods.
In terms of music, which is still the primary use of the iPod, the large disk space means there is no need to choose which albums or playlist you want on that day as I’ve a fairly large collection of music that has been engulfed by the iPod and the only problem I have is choosing what to listen to. This is aided by the shuffle option which is available on all iPod’s but is worth mentioning none the less. There are several ways to search for music under artist, song, album, genre or composer, added to which is several automatically generated playlists such as most played and favourites. The stereo sound quality of the music is nothing short of brilliant and there is also a wide variety of EQ options for particular types of music.
Other media formats available to the iPod video is photos which can be stored on your iPod and played as a slideshow with accompanying music. I have no problem with this feature but I also wouldn’t care if it wasn’t there. The biggest advantage from the photo’s are the album covers which are now (at last!) added on iTunes when you download an album. You can also use your iPod to make notes, store contact details, tell the time and even use as a stopwatch. This does appear to be a half hearted attempt at being a PDA but as the iPod states on it’s menu, these are just ‘Extras’ and I don’t really use them at all. I’m not sure this is a downside to the iPod as no one buys one to use in that way.
The software (namely iTunes) and hardware either exclusive or compatible to the iPod are a large reason why it is doing so well and is a huge consideration when buying an mp3 player. No other player is so well supported and complimented by accessories or programs. The now infamous style and appearance of the iPod mean that there is a certain kudos surrounding it which you may or may not deem important but I believe it does play a part in making your decision (Or perhaps I’m just vain).
Having written such a positive review of this iPod, one I do believe it deserves, I think it’s important to note the disadvantages of this model. For starters, the iPod Video is larger and heaver than most other iPods and mp3 players. This may be good for the watching the videos as discussed but it does add a certain weight to your pocket as well. Another criticism you might read about is scratching but I don’t really see a problem with this as a case is provided in the package and they are only slight ones on the back. Nothing stays immaculate when used so often and I wouldn’t agonise over it.
The older models were notorious for breaking and sticking but I have had no such problems with this model. You may have problems if the iPod is unduly cold but other than that I have had no problems whatsoever. The final problem I have identified with this iPod is the battery life; music wise it’s fine and you’ll have to be on a hell of a journey to run it out, but when watching films it can be left wanting and if you are on the road then you’re pretty much stuck.
In summary, this really is a great mp3 player. It is the leader of it’s field and rightly so. It’s cool, minimalist appearance belies it’s superb technology and ease of use. There is more than enough storage space for anyone other than a Radio 1 DJ or Film critic and ability to play both music and film to such a high standard is unparalleled. In terms of value for money, I believe the prices are quite reasonable now though it is still enough to make you consider how much you woud use it. If you do not wish to use the iPod to watch films then I would suggest you consider how much hard disk space you really need and if an iPod nano, which is cheaper, would suffice. I have enough music to twice the 6GB nano and hence need the iPod video. However I would suggest you consider the video option as it opens up a whole new world in iPod technology.

...I downloaded it from the Apple website and within moments of installing, it had found and converted my existing tracks. Adding more from CD was also remarkably quick. Similarly Podcasts, which in the past I’ve never had much success with, were easy to browse, select and synchronise with my iPod. I hadn’t realised how much I was missing; I may be a bit sad here, but there’s something exciting about synchronising the iPod and then seeing what new Podcasts ... ...as good. Unfortunately my Apple earphones have since developed a bit of a rattle so perhaps they aren’t as robust?
Video quality is also remarkable; the screen may not be as large as that on some devices but the picture quality makes it very watchable even for the duration of a movie. This Ipod is amazing. I don't know how i coped without one for so long. My previous portable music device was a Sony Minidisc player, so this was a mammoth step up in terms of technology. Yet it is exceedingly simple to use.
With 30GB storage, I did a little maths (which might be wrong): Assume the average MP3/AAC file is 6MB. I estimate thats approximately 5000 songs (I don't think I even own that many songs in my CD collection!!) If you take an ... ...songs!!
Aesthetically, he black case is extremely stylish. Although I do recommend getting a case, as the silver rear-side is prone to scratching. The wheel control can also get slightly scratched, but is harder to protect, and I guess its everyday wear and tear and should be expected. Especially when you use the ipod as much as I do. (3-4 hours a day minimum)

The ipod 30 gb video was my first decant mp3 player. The one before it was a 256mb samsung. Many of my friend had told me that the ipods were far too expensive for what they are. But I have to say that I dissagree. Firstly, the huge amount of memory,(30gb) will store pretty much every song and video you have in your whole collection.
