Well guys, here I am fulfilling my consumer duty and providing you with my musings on the very latest word in cool – the iPod mini. iPod’s baby sibling is just about to hit UK shores and I’m pretty confident it’s destined to be even more popular than it’s predecessor. But first, for those of you who either detest technology with a passion, or simply live in a bubble, what is an iPod mini?

Basically, the iPod mini is a portable music player that can carry large amounts of music without the need for tapes, CD’s, minidisks and the like. The music is stored digitally through a wire that leads from your computer via either a USB2.0 or a FireWire port to the iPod. There are two ways of acquiring music to put on the player. Firstly, CD’s you already own can be transferred onto your PC, and from there to the iPod mini. This takes about thirty minutes per album, so when you first get the iPod it takes a while to get it set up. Otherwise, you can download music from the internet, either through a fileshare company like Napster or KaZaA, or using iTunes music shop, which is available to American customers only.

Of course, the real question here is: why? What makes iPod, with it’s sleek design and, quite frankly, obscenely large storage capacity, so much better than – and worth so much more money than - other mp3 players?

The obvious first answer is the aesthetics of the thing. It’s available in 5 colours, pink, blue, green, gold and silver. I own the silver version, and I have to say it does look effortlessly stylish. It also lives up to its name, with dimensions of 3.6”x2.0”x0.5”. At only 3.6 ounces in weight, you won’t even notice it’s in your pocket. The headphones are unique, with a new design termed ‘earbuds’ by Apple – although these do also make it clear to potential muggers that you have about two hundred quids’ worth of equipment in your pocket.

Another great advantage of the iPod mini is its technical designs. One player can hold almost 4GB of music – that’s 1000 songs of four minutes each. This is only a fraction of the capacity of one of the larger iPods, which can hold up to 10 000 songs, but to be honest this doesn’t bother me in the slightest. I don’t think I’ve ever even heard 10 000 songs in my lifetime! The piece de resistance, though, of all iPods, is without doubt the ‘Innovative Click Wheel.’ Instead of repeatedly pressing buttons to scroll through songs - no mean feat with 1000 of them to get through – simply rest your thumb on the touch sensitive wheel and move it clockwise to scroll downwards and anti-clockwise to scroll back up. This is extremely novel for a few weeks, and everyone loves trying it out! It also makes the iPod extremely easy to use, along with extensive menus and options, and clear instruction booklets. Sound quality is fantastic – songs downloaded from CD are at the same quality whilst those downloaded from the internet can be just as good, although this depends on the source quality.

There are countless extra features on the iPod mini, some better than others. The sleep timer allows you to fall asleep listening to your music, automatically switching off after 15 minutes, 30 minutes, 60 minutes, 90 minutes or 120 minutes. I use this regularly; less so the alarm as it works through the headphones, which simply don’t stay in all night. Games are pretty basic, the only one I really use is the Music quiz which plays you parts of the songs stored on your iPod mini and you guess which one it is. The calendar and to-do list are to be used in conjunction with your PC, along with a contacts list, so you can have your appointments, phone numbers and email addresses with you at the touch of a button. The iPod mini can also be used as an extension of your hard drive – in a similar way to a floppy disk, you can store documents on it and then connect it to another computer to retrieve them. I have never used this process myself but the instruction booklet is extremely clear and the process seems quite simple.

Included with the iPod mini are the earbuds, with two sets of sterile foam coverings, a charger, all the appropriate leads for connecting to the computer, a charger, and the iTunes software, which is used for organizing all your music on your computer and transferring it to your iPod mini. This is done on an automatic basis – as soon as you connect the iPod mini to the PC it senses that it is there – although this sometimes takes a few minutes – and synchronises all playlists and makes all necessary updates on the iPod. Creating playlists is a doddle either on the iPod itself or on the computer. It keeps record of the songs you have played most recently, the songs you play the most, and the ones you rate highest, and you can also quickly create your own playlists by selecting songs, albums or artists and adding them to the ‘on-the-go’ playlist. When listening you can listen to the songs in order, shuffled, or repeated. This applies to both the iPod mini and iTunes on the PC, which replaces Windows media player or whatever other player you currently use. When transferring a CD onto your computer, nine times out of ten iTunes will be able to automatically name the songs, artists and the album, so you don’t have to mess about renaming tracks.

The iPod mini also comes with a one-year guarantee, so Apple will fix any problems caused by faulty workmanship that comes to light in the first year. Once items are replaced or fixed, they will be covered either for the rest of your original guarantee period or for ninety days, whichever is longer. Luckily I’ve never had to use this facility, so I’m not sure how exactly how ‘quibble-free’ this is.

Of course, as with all such gadgets, there are problems. Although the iPod mini is quite sturdy, dropping it can cause technical glitches, to say nothing of the scratches it can incur! Of course, I’m aware that my clumsiness is at fault here, but after dropping my iPod mini once, about 50% of the music stopped playing – it was still there, listed in all the menus, but for some reason it couldn’t be accessed and listened to. It took me the best part of a day to delete it all from the iPod and load it all back on again! Even without my clumsy intervention, the iPod isn’t the most reliable device on earth, especially for the first month or so. It has a habit of ‘crashing’ every few hours, and the screen freezes. A quick check in the trouble shooting guide though, and there is a simple process for resetting the iPod mini, which does not lose any of the information stored. I haven’t noticed this happening in the last month or so either, so perhaps it was just teething problems, sorted by the iPod mini itself.

Another main problem is a security issue. The distinctive earbuds caused a spate of muggings, and so Apple are redesigning these to be less obvious. I would personally feel extremely uncomfortable walking alone in the dark with mine on show – I’m always very careful about making sure it is out of sight in such situations.

Price here is a clear disadvantage. It looks as if these will retail in the UK for £200 to £250. This is a lot for an mp3 player, and you really are paying for the design and the large capacity, but most of all the status of owning an iPod. It is, for the most part, an extremely high quality music player, but for all except the most die-hard music fans, there are perfectly reasonable players on the market for under £100. This really is an image thing! I purchased mine on eBay, from America where they have been available for about four months. I paid a few pence over £200 in all, including postage and packaging.

The final problem – and the one I hear about the most – is the battery life. The iPod can be charged either through the mains or by connecting it to your (switched-on) computer. It takes one hour to charge to 80% of its battery power, but four hours to charge completely. This isn’t really a problem for me, I tend to either charge it overnight or whenever I come on the computer, connect it up. Once fully charged, it will last for about eight hours of playback time. This suits my needs perfectly but some – presumably those who either require their iPods for very long periods of time, or those on an electricity meter – consider this to be nowhere near long enough. There have also been many complaints about the battery getting less and less efficient over time until after charging it has only an hour or so until it needs charging again. To be honest I can only imagine this occurs from extremely excessive use and charging, because mine is still going strong for at least eight hours minimum after charging.

These, however, are the only problems I have noticed, and I have owned my iPod mini for nearly four months now.

So if you’re looking for a good quality, good value mp3 player, you should probably avoid this one. On the other hand, if you love gadgetry, cute extra features, a cool image and more memory space than you can shake a stick at, this is your thing.
