Okay, having made the transition from portable CD player - to a MiniDisc player - to pretty pink iPod Mini, I may be a tad biased. But compared to MiniDisc (which I thought were wonderfully better than CDs) this device is amazing. Firstly, it looks damn cool. Available in 5 colours, it’s nice that Apple have taken time to allow some choice in which one you buy.
I also love the size of these things. Measuring in at 9cm x 5 cm x 1.5cm (approx.) they are small and light enough to fit into your trouser pockets without creating an enormous bulge, and although the trademark white earphones they come with are a guaranteed mugging-magnet, they can be easily swapped for regular black of silver ones.
The click wheel way of navigating round the features is original and very fun, (although sometimes when you appear to be only moving the wheel very slightly it still whizzes past the song you are trying to play, and it takes a few attempts to get there!) There are also many different ways to play your songs. When you decide what to play you can select by choosing from lists of Artists, Songs, Albums, Genres or Composers. Everything is listed alphabetically and is fairly easy to use. The iPod also has extra features such as games (not the most hi-tech or impressive, but sufficient if you're stuck on a train for hours) contacts, clock, calendar and notes. It also comes with an impressive backlight if you're stuck in the dark, but this drains the battery quickly if used excessively.
I was also highly impressed by the quality of the songs. As those who own MiniDisc players will know, as the song files are reduced to fit more on a Disc, the quality is greatly reduced too, but on the iPod Mini it isn't like that at all. Well, at least not to my musically untrained ears. The battery life doesn't compare to most other mp3 players around at the moment as it lasts for a mere eight hours, but I find I only really need to charge mine once every three days or so, and it doesn't really take much effort to plug the thing into it's charger.
The software that comes with the iPod mini, iTunes, is quite easy to use for most computer-literate people, and allows you to create play lists and transfer music from your computer to your iPod. I've had no real problems with the software, but I was a bit disappointed with the time it took for the tracks to be transferred to the iPod, as it wasn't as fast as I'd expected. However, I have been assured that this isn't the fault of the software, but something to do with my twelve year old, very slow computer.
All in all, I would recommend the iPod mini for those who want a good few hundred tracks on a stylish, easy to use and incredibly small and lightweight mp3 player.
