Although I’ve had a number of MP3 players. Apple’s iPod mini really does top the lot! If you’re looking for an MP3 player that’s sexy, but sophisticated and small, but packed full of wonderful surprises than the iPod mini is the MP3 player for you! Apple have cleverly packed all of the originals iPod’s best features into this mini version, oh, and when I say mini, I mean mini!
The iPod is fashionably compact and it’s sleek shape fits right into your back pocket. Or if you don’t have a back pocket, then why not slip your iPod into your belt clip and look even more stylish? The free components that are included in your purchase are:
Belt Clip IPod Dock Connector to FireWire Cable IPod Dock connector to USB 2.0 Cable IPod Power Adapter Apple Earphones (plus
two pairs of spare buds)
I felt that Apple could have included some kind of stand or dock to put your iPod mini into when your not using it or at least a cover to stop it from getting damaged when it’s not being used. When I looked on the Apple website for a cover they charge as much as £20, which I felt was a bit of an extravagance! The accessories that are not included but are able to be bought separately are the following:
iPod mini Dock iPod mini Armband iPod Remote and Earphones iPod In-Ear Headphones iPod Dock Connector to FireWire Cable iPod Stereo Connection Kit iPod Power Adapter World Travel Adapter Kit Other accessories like speakers, headsets, backup batteries, car adapters e.c.t.
Also included in your package is iTunes software that will enable you to download songs, store songs, copy CDs, listen to the radio online and more. You are able to store a thousand songs on an iPod mini and at first I though this might be a problem, but after I’d stored my collection of thirteen CDs on to my iPod it only came to about a hundred songs. The only problem that I encountered from burning my CDs on to iTunes was that some of them had some sort of protection on them and therefore were unable to be put on to my iPod. For example, The Darkness’s ‘Permission to Land’ and Velvet Revolver’s ‘Contraband’ album. Although this was slightly disappointing, I soon got to grips with the purchasing part of iTunes and was able to download these albums for 79p a track! And even then you have the choice of selecting only certain songs from the album. Also iTunes gives away a free song of the week, which usually isn’t very good although sometimes there might be the odd one that might be to your taste!
You are able to download any chart songs/albums and even audio books from the iTunes website. In fact you’re even able to listen to a clip of the track before you download. By giving iTunes your credit card details all you need is a username and a password and that’s it, you’re ready to download! Any downloaded songs are put into the ‘purchased music’ section of your iTunes library. You are also able to customise your library by downloading pictures of the album/song sleeve and rating songs that you like with stars (the rating system can also be carried out on your actual iPod).
Once you have copied your CDs on to iTunes and have downloaded any tracks that you fancy in the charts then it’s time to sync your iPod. This takes very little time and of course depends on how many new songs you’ve downloaded or copied on to iTunes. Still, the beauty of the iPod mini for me is the pure speediness that it takes to transfer your entire iTunes library on to your iPod! If your battery isn’t fully charged it will even charge start charging while it’s plugged into your computer.
The actual iPod itself I found is just as easy to use, although for me, it took a few tries to settle in with the idea of the click wheel. To select menus or songs you have to move your finger lightly over the click wheel. Even though this is a very fast way of selecting items, it’s also very annoying when it’s too fast because it can skip over some items and it takes you a while to select them. Of course, however well you get on with your click wheel will depend on how well you can control ‘fiddly’ gadgets and in my case it wasn’t as simple as I had imagined. So if you’re the kind of person that doesn’t like fiddly controls you might be better off with the original version of the iPod.
So, once you are used to the fiddly click wheel, there is quite a good range of features to explore. To be honest when I bought my iPod I thought there would be so many exciting features that I wouldn’t have time to listen to music. My advice is to only buy the iPod mini if you’re looking for an MP3 player because the sound quality is great and you are able to organise your songs into play lists and even rate them. But don’t buy the iPod mini if you’re looking for a really revolutionary hi-tech gadget because it isn’t. Apart from the music playing functions there are games, but believe me they are really boring after a while. Apart from the games, there are features like a clock, an alarm, a calendar and a contacts list. The only feature that I found useful was the clock really seeing as I have all of the other features on my mobile phone and so I don’t need two gadgets with the same organisational functions.
One of the best features about the iPod mini is that it always looks fantastic! That is one feature that I can definitely guarantee! The iPod comes in five different shiny, metallic colours: blue, pink, green, gold and silver. Of course, like everyone else I wanted a pink one but because of popularity was unable to. Therefore I have a blue one instead and it’s just as sexy! In fact it doesn’t really matter what colour you get because they all look gorgeous, especially when you put the blue backlight on!
So, if you’re looking for an MP3 player that looks fantastic and plays good quality music than I do recommend the iPod mini. Of course the price is a bit of a disadvantage but we may see a price reduction in the January sales!
