Since the launch of podcasting the wife has hijacked my 3G iPod! So with my birthday fast approaching decided to purchase a second iPod for my own personal use. Now a two iPod family!
So how much? Purchased in Australia, so with my tax back at the airport, just over £150.
What do you get? Well not a lot actually. Just the basic Nano iPod, a USB2 cable, a set of earphones, installation disk, two stickers (to advertise apple) and a set of instructions. Packaging is the usual MAC uber cool, a delight to open.
What don't you get? No charger, no firewire cable and no docking station. I guess to keep the cost down you get the bare minimum, but enough to get you up and listening to your itunes.
Wont go to much into the details of the product as you can find all the technical stuff on the apple website. But basically it is 4gb of pure aesthetic pleasure. Very very small just
over 3.5 inches by 1.6 inches and yes it is thin as a pencil! 4gb of flash memory, so you will get about 1000 songs on your Nano. Lovely bright LCD colour screen. Nice shiny black finish, stainless back and no scratches on my screen yet. Takes about 3 hours to charge through your USB cable. Battery is stated to last upto 14 hours!
So why did I go for the nano? Well having looked at the play count on my itunes, even though I have over 10gig of downloads, I apparently only listen to about 500 of these tunes! Hence decided that I didn't need loads of storage. When you hook up the Nano, it will ask if you want auto sync or not. Opted for not. So I just drag and drop individual playlists across to the Nano. Transfer is really quick through the USB2 and no real difference to firewire. Note the Nano is not compatible with firewire.
Start up time for the Nano is quicker than my 3G, no doubt due to the fact of no hard drive to get up to speed. The menu is easy to use and follow. Browsing your tunes is easy on the small colour screen, and songs purchased through itunes include the artwork.
The clickwheel is the interface for navigating the menu. This has improved greatly since my 3G. It has more of a clicky feel so you feel like you are pressing something definite if you know what I mean. Spinning your finger round the dial gives the smooth operation of moving up and down the play lists and increasing the volume etc.
I am not a sound engineer! It sounds great. Can't get any more technical than that. The earphones are the usual white, why they don't do black to go with your black nano is a question though. The wife complains they continually fall out of her ears but I guess we are all built differently.
ITunes: Your PC or MAC interface to your Nano. Enough said about that, either you love it or hate it. I personally find it very easy to use and purchases of downloads is a breeze.
You can sync with your iCal and address book. The Nano also comes with some games which I haven't played. Stopwatch also included and I think you can set up time zones or something like that.
Uploaded some photos. The images are amazingly clear for such a small LCD screen. Nice function for slide shows of your favourite pictures.
Durability: Well a lot has been written about the durability of the Nano, cracked screens, scratched screens blah blah blah. First of all I purchased some screen savers. Clear plastic sheets which stick to your nano, dead easy to install and you don't know they are there. Secondly purchased a rubber skin thing which gives added protection. So fully suited and protected. Tend not to stick in my jeans pocket which is the probable cause of all these problems, as your curved arse tries to snap your nano (which is flat) into two separate pieces as you sit down! So it tends to hang round my neck fully protected and no problems to date. You have to remember this is a piece of fine electronics not a leather wallet! One question does anybody sit regularly on their laptop and get similar problems? Nuff said!
To summarise, a very nice purchase and I am chuffed to bits. Get yourself down to an Apple shop and take a test drive. Once you have heard it, felt it, played with it, you will want one.
Just on another note ever since owning my first iPod I have never listened to music as much as now. It will change your life. And on another note if you have MAC you will have no problems, if you have a PC watch out for these pitfalls when using iPods in general. 1. Do you have USB2? My mate couldn't get his working through USB1. Although the guy in the apple shop did say it would work! 2. If you have firewire you may need an adaptor to convert from six pin down to 4 pin. If in doubt just ask its to complicated to explain. 3. Ebay your PC and buy and MAC you know you want to.

Thanks to the integated acceleration sensor you can incline your iPod nano in the horizontal direction and then browse through your albums with Cover Flow, display videos and TV programmes in landscape and images in portrait or landscape format. While playing too it is aligned to your movements. The in-built lithium-ion battery enables a playback of up to 4 h for videos and up to 24 h for music.

Advantages: Small, looks great, durable, huge storage, lots of features. Disadvantages: Has to be charged via USB, though AC adaptors are available separately.
