Yes I know what your thinking, "not another iPod review, I bet this wont tell me anything new"', and you'd probably be right but humour me. This is the 4 GB version of the Apples iPod (also known as the iPod mini). Fo any one who doesn't know anything about iPods, of which suprisingly there may be a few, it is an mp3 player designed by the computer company Apple.
This, still after 3 years, one of the best looking mp3 players on the market today. If not the best. As you can see from it's picture, it's simple elegant design means it's unlikely to go out of date and well let's face, everyone wants one.
Right, on to the main feature, music! The 4 GBs of space on the hard drive of the iPod can hold approximately 1000 3 minute songs in mp3 form or about 100 3 minute songs in WAV form. WAV is the format CDs use and keeping songs as a WAV files improves the quality of the sound a little bit but it not really recommendable as you can see it takes up allot more memory. I convert all my songs into mp3 files and the sound quality is still really nice and crisp and the is very little distortion and you'll very rarely pick up on it. The sound quality of the standard headphones are great when new and stay great if you listen to your music at a lowish volume and very little bass, but if your like me and like your music loud with lots of bass you'll find they will start to buzz after a few months.
If you've never had or played with an iPod I bet your thinking, "1000 songs! How am I ever gonna find the song I what?". Of which my reply would be, "simply if the songs are named correctly". The menu is so easy to get around, you can chose look though artists, albums or just the list of all the songs to find the track you what. This is only useful if all the track are labelled properly, the will not be a problem if you buy mp3s from iTune (or you have internet access if your copying from CD as the is an option on one of the drop down called 'find track names') but if you illegally down load (tut, tut) or use a different legal mp3 site to buy music you may have to change the names a bit which cane get laborious.
On the front there is 5 buttons, a select button right in the middle and a scroll wheel around it with play/pause, next track/fast-forward, previous track/rewind and the menu buttons dotted around it. I've have no problems with these and the hold button make sure you done skip track or anything whilst it's in your pocket.
There are other things the iPod can do, there's a clock, an alarm, a calendar and several games. None of which I use except the clock, which works fine and the games on the darkest moments of boredom. The games are pritty basic and never keep the high score but are OK if your really, really bored.
The battery life is very good when new and you normally get about 5 hours of play time depending on what you do with it. This battery life will stay good but will eventually go. This seems like a very random thing. Some people die completely within the first 6 mouths, mines still got 2 hours battery life after 2 years so it's really pot luck. The one year warranty does cover you for the first year or its £50 to send it off for a new battery.
Finally, iTune is easy to use and is now compatible with most PC system I'm aware of (but do check yours). This software make putting songs on your iPod easy and does come as part of your iPod package.
That is from me, please rate and if there's anything else you'd like to know. leave a comment and I'll try and help you. Thanks for reading, Cammers.
