Ok, I have always been a fan of ipods ever since they came out. I have never owned one until this one came out, as I never could save up enough money. Lots of my friends had them but I just stuck with my phone. The only problem with that was my phone was running out of memory fast. I love music and the little memory card was full in days.
There have been 2 versions of the apple ipod nano and this is the latest version, or second generation. The first generation was the first of its kind, small and lots of memory. The 2nd gen. nano only came out for the Christmas market this year. They brought out lots of different colours and even a product red one (for HIV in Africa). Apple also made an 8GB nano in the 2nd gen. range and It has been a great success. There are big differences between the 2 different types of nano and I will tell you the main ones in this review.
- Apple- Apple is an American based company that has branched out worldwide over the years. They mainly make computers but have since then made the apple ipod. A new musical media player that stormed the world and is an every day product to most people in the UK now. Apple have been very successful in this and are now a multi-billion dollar business.
-The Nano- As I explained at the start there are 2 generations of ipod nano. The 2nd gen. is smaller, has longer battery life and has brighter back light (plus more). The 1st gen. of nano was only available in white or black. They had a metal back plate and it wasn't uncommon for them to snap! But where over all great. The 2nd gen. Are now a lot better, they come in a range of colours, don't have a metal back plate and don't have as many problems as the 1st gen.
-The
box- The new ipod nano box is a small plastic case. It shows the ipod clearly through the clear plastic. The box is only slightly bigger than the ipod but is deeper as it contains leads and instructions etc. over all the box is good as it doesn't use lots of wasteful packaging. Unlike the 1st gen. They don't come with the itunes software so you need to download it off the itunes website. Included in the box are, an ipod, a computer connection cable, instructions, headphones and other apple related services leaflets.
-The style- The nano is very small, hence the name. It has the ipod style click wheel in the middle for browsing and it has the control buttons in the middle of the wheel. The wheel is white on the green model. The whole body is green and its not a horrible green like you would expect, it's actually really nice. The screen isn't small for a small device. On the top there is a "hold" switch that you slide along to deactivate the buttons, like keypad lock on a mobile. The headphone port is also located on the top. On the back there is a small box displaying what memory capacity the ipod is and also some writing about copyright and stuff. If you buy your ipod from the apple website they also give you a choice of engraving, this means you can put your name or any small piece of writing on your ipod at the bottom. You can get two lines for the engraving.
-The screen- the screen on this ipod is really good. It is in full colour so that when a song is playing it can display the album art as well. This is a really good feature as it is good to be able to see what album it is off of and the colour make some of the extras like the games (will be mentioned later) a lot better than the previous version.
-I-Tunes- I-tunes is the software that is needed to put music onto any ipod. In the older generations of ipod the disk for I-tunes has been supplied but with the growing number of people with strong internet connections apple decided to leave the disk out of the box and make it downloadable from the apple website. It is really easy to download as it just takes a click of a button and accept the license agreement that nobody reads anyway (for all I know it could say that they now own my house!!). Once it is downloaded it is very easy to use. You can put music from your hard drive onto it, CD's and there is also a feature where you make an account and can download music. Downloading music is a very common thing now and I-tunes isn't the only place to get them. I don't know how much it costs as I haven't ever done it but I know that you can get gift cards from supermarkets that are good as presents. Over all I think I-tunes is a great piece of software that if you didn't need it for an ipod I wouldn't have found. Thanks apple for that.
-Charging- There is a ipod to USB drive cable supplied with the ipod, this is used to transfer files and to charge the ipod. The bad thing about this is that you have to have a computer to charge your ipod!! You can also get mains chargers but they are extra. I would highly recommend getting one for long holidays. Also plugging the ipod into speakers will charge it too but if it is running it will take forever to charge, just switch it off but plug it in.
-Headphones- The apple headphones have also changed since the previous gen. They have taken on a more sleek curved design from the last ones. They are pure white and fit well with an ipod. If you have these headphones showing everyone will know you have an ipod (sometimes not a good thing ROBBERS). In a way ipod headphones have become an accessory. I know loads of people without ipods that have got the headphones and a cheap mp3 player. The headphones are really good, there are other headphone that you can get if you are looking for better sound quality or a noise cancelling type. All in all I would just keep these headphones as they are really great.
-Menu- The start menu is a basic easy to follow menu with a white background and lots of choices. You can choose from music, settings, extras etc etc. I will go on as if you had picked music. After the first screen the same set-up of screen follows giving you the choice of artists, songs, albums or shuffle. If you pick shuffle it will go straight onto any random song and show you the album art and the name of the song and artist. The song will start playing. If you select another option you have to then select a song/ artist until you get to that screen. The menus are very easy to follow and I could already use it before I got mine as I had used other peoples before and picked it up easily. You just have to scroll with the wheel and select using the middle button.
-Extras- There are lots of extras on this such as, games, clock, Equaliser and many more. I will now go through them. The games are really quite simple. There is parachute, where you have to shot the planes and parachutes, music quiz, where a sample of a song you have is played and you have to pick what one it is from a selection and the classic block breaker game. I found it quite hard to use the wheel to play games at first but I soon got the hang of it. The equaliser isn't that good. There are a few things that you can select but only one may be on at a time, whether it is bass boost or vocals. Dance or metal, only one can be on. I would have expected better as I am really into the way music sounds and I don't go for cheap quality. The equaliser isn't great but its better than nothing. The clock is just an add on. I never use it but as you expect it tells the time and that is all I can really say.
-Battery- The battery in the new gen. Is so much better. From a standard charge time the battery can last for 24 hours of playback. This is really quite good, as I have never actually listened to music for 24 hours straight on it so I will always have some charge left in it if I am going somewhere. This is a lot better than other mp3 player's battery life as they are normally like 8hours. I am really pleased with this new improvement as I think it really helps.
-Accessories- As with all great products accessories are always soon to follow. Loads of major companies have realised a gap in the market (now filled) for ipod accessories so there are no shortages. There are loads of accessories and some are available straight from apple. But they all need to be purchased separately. There really are loads, ipod skins, ipod leather cases, speakers, gym arm bands. I recommend you get a good silicone skin and a screen protector as it does tend to scratch inside you pocket. You can also get gym armbands as I mentioned above. These fix the ipod to your upper arm and also yet you see the screen and use it easily. Most of the accessories are quite cheap apart from the speakers. There is a large range of choices and they are all equally good.
-Problems- Lots of people that I know who have had ipods for over a year have had some problems. I know people who have had up to 4 ipods (spoiled rotten) and they have all broken. This has not happened to me yet but as I say I have only had it since Christmas. If there are ever any problems the ipod comes with a free one-year warranty and you can buy an extended warranty. If it breaks within this time you can send it back to apple and they will refurbish it to its original state (well almost). I think this can be done out side the warranty but will cost a fee. There are also shops that can fix ipods as well. Although the ipods have been known to break, the fact that the after care apple gives you has helped to sell them.
-Price- The 4GB model that I am reviewing is selling on the apple website for about £139. This is an ok price as the previous models have been more expensive. I have also found it at a cheaper price elsewhere. I think the price is really good as the apple ipod nano is a top of the range product. You are kind of paying for the name apple with this price but who cares as it is a great product as I hope you can see.
-Other notes- There is no radio receiver built into the ipod but it can be bought separately. If ipod bring out another ipod nano I would like to see that In as I think I would listen to the radio a lot if I could. Also I voice recorder would be good as I am very forgetful but it doesn't have one built in. If these were put into a new nano I wouldn't think twice about buying it. The ipod does scratch very easily so as I said I would recommend a skin of some sort and a screen protector.
-Conclusion- I love my ipod. I love the colour I love the shape, I love everything. It is so easy to use and I carry it everywhere. The headphones are good, and the 24 hr battery is amazing. I love the changes from the old nano. The only things that could be fixed is that it is easy to scratch. Also it could have the radio receiver and voice recording functions. Apart from that this is an all round great piece of modern day electronics. It is a must have for anyone.
5/5 5 gold stars top marks ..
