The Ipod nano is beautiful. It is definitely the most aesthetically pleasing mp3 player on the market at the moment. But its beauty is extremely fragile and can be blemished all too easily. Take my advice, when buying the nano make sure you pick up a protective silicone case for it as well. The smooth shiny surface that first beams at you when you open the box can be replaced by a rather ragged looking scratched facade after a few weeks of normal usage. This is especially noticable on the black model.
About the player itself: the user interface is exceptionally easy to navigate. The click wheel is set at a perfect sensitivity and makes song selection effortlessly easy. The screen is also a marvel to behold, the LCD screen allows album art to be displayed in full colour. iTunes allows for the easy transfer of songs to the device and is also able to convert wma type files to the AAC format which the player recognises. The player is breathtakingly small, I usually store it in the breast pocket of my shirt while commuting to work; its weight is negligible. Sound quality is also good although i would agree with other reviewers and recommend investing in a better pair of ear-phones than the standard ones provided.
But the iPod nano does have one significant flaw. I chose to deduct 1 star from the product due to its poor battery life, depending on the users access to USB ports they may choose to dock more. I have easy access to USB ports all day so charging is never a major inconvenience but i find the frequency with which i have to plug it into my PC to be quite annoying. Dont expect to get the 14hrs life advertised. That is a wildly optimistic estimate, most likely achieved with no backilght and a low volume. In my normal usage (2secs backlight timer, decent volume, album art on) i get maybe 6hrs from the device. I find this quite inadequate, seeing as i got 18 from my previous creative mp3 (albeit it was twice the size!). And of course the battery is not user changable so you will have to pay Apple 65.95$ for the luxury of having your battery replaced.
Despite this flaw I still find the iPod nano a wonderful piece of technology, its size is simply amazing. To have a library of 850 songs in my front shirt pocket is a sign of how far the technology has evolved from the relatively recent days of the walkman and discman. I'm very happy with the purchase (truth be told, I'm quite smug taking it out in the middle of a crowded Tokyo subway where movement is extremely limited!). I'm just not looking forward to inevitably paying that 65dollars to have the battery changed...but it'll be worth it!
