I wanted an Apple iPod from when they were first introduced several years ago, but back then, they were quite expensive, so I was pleased when I received one for my birthday in March.
My iPod Nano is the slimline black 8GB version. It has the capacity to store 2000 songs, which can be either downloaded from CD, via a computer or from the iTunes website, which is a huge music database, each song costing around 70 pence. The convenience of this, means you need only store songs you want and not have to pick and choose from an album. I usually find I only ever like one or two songs on an album, so it can be a costly method. The iPod nano comes with earphones, user guide booklet and USB cable connector, which allows the ipod to "sync" itself to the iTune "library" and also acts as a charger, taking power from the computer it is connected to.
I'm not the most adept user of gadgets and technology, but the iPod is fairly easy to master. It has a 1.5 inch LCD screen and you can navigate through the menu, using a kind of touch sensor dial, not unlike using a laptop mouse pad. Users can access the iPod menu in over 20 different languages.Through the menu, you can select particular songs and play back, access the controls, including the configurable maximum volume limit.
IPod owners can purchase a number of accessories for their machine, including docking stations, with speakers so you can listen to music without the need for earphones. There are also iPod "skins" which are plastic or latex covers, protecting the iPod from scratching and impact damage. Also available are belt clips and armbands, where iPods can be secured when on the move.Although I love the sleek slylish design of my iPod and the convenience of being able to store hundred of songs, individual to my taste, the main problem I have is with the volume. Although I have entered the maximum in the control panel, I find it is still not loud enough, especially if I'm using it in a noisy gym, which already has it's own background music. As this is where I mainly use my iPod I feel it is a bit of a let down.
I was recently told by someone, that due to EC regulations on noise pollution and to reduce damage to hearing, the maximum volume on the iPod has been reduced. However, I'm not entirely sure this information correct. I may at some point purchase some inner ear earphones, such as Bose to see if this improves the sound.Despite this, I would recommend the iPod for it's attractive design, convenience of size, weight and purpose. The price of the iPod Nano 8Gb is around £160, but will probably decrease over the next few years.
