The Ipod Nano 4th Gen

It comes in a range of metallic shiny colours; Silver, Black, Purple, Blue, Green, Yellow, Orange, Red and Pink. I chose to buy the Purple, I'm so pleased with my choice. It's a deep, dark, cold toned colour. All are great, and most are bright and energetic colours. All have white touch wheels, apart from the black and silver Ipods, who's touch wheels are black. The top of this generation of the Nano has a hold switch, which reveals an orange colour when held, and white when un-held. The purpose of this is to stop the function of the touch wheel and other buttons on the Ipod when it's in your pocket or bag. On the underside of the Ipod is the port for the charger, which also enables you to use the Ipod as a Mass Storage Device (I will come to this later), and the headphone jack. I'd also like to add that the top and bottom of the Ipod are the same colour as the touch wheel. Its curved edges are sleek and smooth, it feels good to hold. It can be quite slippy, there's no grip, so I'd buy a protective silicon cover for grip and protection. I've dropped it multiple times and it hasn't even scratched! I'm not sure whether I have amazing luck when it comes to my Ipod, or that the 4th Gen Nano is extremely strong and damage resistant. You can change font size through the Settings option if you need to, and there's the option of having menu names read out, like an audio aid. A good idea for anyone with bad eyesight, or if you're on the road and need to keep your eyes infront of you, rather than look at your Ipod.

Music

I can't say i'm an expert with sound quality, but I'd say the Nano's near the top. To be honest I reckon it's the earphones that make the sound differnece with the Nano. I've had budget earphones and the sound quality wasn't anywhere as near as good as the quality when listening through the earphones that came with the Ipod. And when you use these supplied earpones the sound quality's top class.
An 8GB can hold around 2000 songs. Song library is synchronised from the owner's Itunes library and can we displayed by: artist, album, genre, composer, genius playlist or shuffle. Playlists synced from Itunes can also be accessed and played on the Ipod Nano. While playing a song, album artwork is shown, if the Ipod is titled landscape then the Cover Flow feature is initiated, allowing you to browse albums on your Ipod freely whilst listening to music.

Accessories

The earphones included with the Ipod are good quality, not excellent, and they don't last that long, but they're perfectly fine for a casual listener. If you're a professional or seek to listen to your music in the best quality possible then you may want to invest in some better earphones. As for me, I like the ones included.

Features

  • Listen to music
  • Watch films
  • Watch television programs
  • Watch Podcasts
  • Listen to audiobooks
  • Use it as a USB mass storage device
  • Play games

I have only watched Skins, South Park, Family Guy and Inbetweeners on my Ipod, I found the screen smaller than I'd like, but it was a good way to pass time on slow public transport. Image is sharp, good quality and it doesn't blur or pixelate. I prefer to watch videos in landscape, as the seen is wider that way and so you get a bigger better image.

The range of features is good compared to other MP3 players, I like how you can store files from the computer or laptop on it, like a USB stick. The 3 games that come with the Ipod are pretty fun - A card game, a maze game, and a brick-breaking game; Klondike, Maze and Vortex.

There are also the capabilities of setting an alarm, viewing and editing a calendar, clocks showing times from all around the world and contact information.

Disadvantages

No camera. You can't take pictures, but you can transfer them from a compute to your Ipod, and then browse then remotely. I think the touch wheel is heat-sensitive, by this I mean when you're hands are really cold, or you're wearing gloves, you can't use the touch wheel, this really annoys me.

Final Verdict

This is a great choice if you're looking to buy an Ipod. If you want more options, like internet, camera and video, then this isn't what you want. But if you aren't bothered about browsing the web or taking photos then this ideal.
