Despite the fact that so many people complain that ipods don't have a long life and stop working within a year or so, I decided to get myself one as a Christmas present. I love my music and I just found so annoying having to carry around my battered CD player and only being able to have a small selection of CDs with me. Let me tell you all the pros and cons I found about this gadget.
FEATURES ********** This particular item has a 8GB space which equals to the storage of 2000 songs or 7000 pictures or 8 hours of video.
What differs this 3rd generation model from its predecessors is first of all its shape and size. The other ones where rectangular and slightly bigger and thicker, this one instead is everr so thin.. A friend of mine jokes that she could fit it in her mouth… I would not dare her. The screen is a nice decent size, very clear and the rotating wheel underneath makes it so easy to scroll through your choices and the button in the middle allows you to confirm your choice. You can buy this pretty everywhere now, but if you decide to get it from the Apple website you can make the most of their free engraving service. This allows you to write a message (if it is a present) or personalize it with your name. What they do they basically
laser the inscription at the back of the ipod (on the metal surface).
WHAT COMES IN THE BOX ********** When you fork out lots of money to get a tiny clear plastic box with a tiny square gadget you do freak out a bit… "all that money only for this??". We are in an era where things get smaller and smaller, as an example you might have also seen advertised on TV the new Apple laptop… in a way small things can be a bonus, they save space, are easy to carry… but when is small just too small?? It might be just me but although I do like this ipod I feel it is just too tiny to lose, too fragile to handle… first thing I did when I bought it was to get a silicon case to protect it! As mentioned the packaging is very small, just bigger than a packet of cigarettes of 20. you get your Ipod, your earphones in white and a white USB port cable to connect it to your laptop, charge it and download your songs.. You also get a tiny piece of paper with the guarantee but that is about it...
PRICE ********** As you may imagine this item does not come cheap, in normal retail stores it goes for £126.00, at a UK airport duty free you pay £120.00. Amazon is currently charging £117.68 for their 8GB ipods but they do not stock this specific colour. I am sure you can find bargains on ebay, but beware of dodgy sellers. Another way to get this really cheap is to buy it in USA, especially now that the pound is rather strong compared to the dollar. I was not lucky enough to travel but my friend who works for BA kindly got one for me and at the current exchange rate it turns out I got it for around £106.00. Furthermore in certain states you can claim the tax back (as some tourists can do in the UK) so it all adds up to a decent saving.
HOW TO GET STARTED ********** You first of all make sure your gadget is charged, you connect it to your pc and download the iTunes program from the Apple website www.apple.com/uk, I remember you first got the CD rom with the program with the first ipods (my ex-boyfriend had one). Downloading is not that much of a tricky business I suppose it also depends on your computer if you do have a pretty old version or a flashy Ferrari. I would give myself a couple of hours for this business simply so that you can take your time, choose your CDs, not rush into anything, get a grip on how things work. At the end what you have is an extremely clever gadget which allows you to listen to your favourite tunes, or view your best pictures or even view a film! I find this very clever! And the first thing you notice when you own an MP3 player is that even during a bumpy ride the music does not skip, it is totally crystal clear and such a pleasure to enjoy. In my experience it allows you to drift in your own cocoon when people around you in the train are fighting to get a sit on a train…
WHAT IS THE RED BUSINESS ALL ABOUT? ********** (PRODUCT) RED collects funds for the Global Fund to fight AIDS in Africa, you might have also seen on the market a Motorola mobile phone advertized by Bono of U2 and also an AMEX credit card. Basically by buying this ipod product only avalable on 8GB and on the ipod shuffle you are helping towards the cause. For more information about it you can visit www.joinred.com. Considering that with the purchase of this at no extra cost compared to the other available colours you might as well do some good and help the less unfortunate I suppose. I think the colour is pretty cool too, a nice flashy metallic red, rather eye catching!
MY OPINION ********** Ipods are expensive, that is a matter of fact, and there is so much choice out there, I would recommend it if you are a bit of a fanatic and would really make the most of it, for example if you only listen to the same few cds there is no point in getting this, you might as well get an average MP3 player, if instead you want to download films or a few pictures you might want to make this your choice. I never owned a different brand so can't really compare but so far I am glad with it and never complained of any troubles… well fingers crossed.
I had to get in touch with their customer service as my friend could not find her receipt and I really wanted to insure it and have to admit my call was answered very quickly, in a polite manner and was told that a receipt is not needed and if I registered with them there and then I would have it insured for free against any problems that would arise (of course relating to the ipod itself not caused by negligence..)
I find it easy to use, easy to navigate and make my choice, I do find it is too small and in all honest truth being a woman I worry sometimes if I have to walk in a dodgy area with the bright white earphones showing, simply because they are a plain telling sign you own an ipod and I have a male friend who got attacked by a bunch of young boys who wanted to rob him of the gadget. Not nice...
I would recommend it but at the same time I would be cautious about it and keep an eye on the ever changing market!
