This is the second iPod ive owned - I broke the last one, and it was my fault. So I've bought this newer version and I have to say it is brilliant. It is amazingly small and light for what it does - just 6.5mm thick, making it very easy to carry around without it becoming a nuisance. It also makes it easy to fit in your pocket without it looking ridiculous bulging out like the first mp3 players did.
However, it is so thin there could possibly be a risk of it snapping easily if it was put under any kind of strain - if it got accidentally stood on or something. This hasnt happened to me, but it is something you have to be wary of.
Aparently you can fit 2000 songs on an 8gb ipod, but I dont have this much on mine yet so I couldnt
say. Ive got around 650 songs taking up about 2.5gb, so this figure should be about right. However, if you put videos on it, this figure is likely to be reduced dramtically.
The battery life is very good - it lasts around 24 hours playing non stop with no charge, on music, and 5 hours playing video - so you shouldn't need to recharge too often. A free charger comes with it, but this can only be used on a computer. If you want a mains charger you will have to pay extra which could be anything between £10-15. If you have regular access to a computer this should be fine, however, if you want it for going on holiday where youll be away from a computer for a while, it may be necessary to purchase one separately.
The actual sound quality is up to standard - sounding very clear, with many different settings: acoustic, bass booster & reducer, classical, dance, deep, electronic, flat, hip hop, jazz, latin, loudness, lounge, piano, pop, R&B, rock, small speakers, spoken word, treble booster & reducer, and vocal booster. This means you can change the setting to suit the style of music you're playing - a handy feature.
The navigation around the iPod is very sophisticated yet simple to use. The touch sensitive scroll tool means you can quickly move from the top to the bottom of a list. From the main menu, you can move to videos, music, photos, podcasrs, extras and all settings. This makes it easy to find individual files. There are then usbfolders within each one, for example artists, albums and genres in the music section. So there are various ways to find a particular song - there is even a search function. The navigation process is made easier by the fact that it has a 2" screen. This may not sound like much, but compared to previous models and other brands, this is a large screen for an mp3 player.
The video quality is very good for such a small object too. Like the sound quality, it is very clear, I've yet to find something that was too fuzzy to see. Photos are the same too - you can organise these into folders and subfolders like with the music from your computer, and they too look very clear on the pod.
It also comes free with three games: Klondike, Vortex and iPod quiz. These are ok if youre bored on a long train journey - but not really something you would sit and play for fun. With a small screen, there is only so much it can do in terms of gaming. There is also a stopwatch, a calendar and you can store notes on it. An alarm clock is also available, however I do not personally find it loud enough to wake me up. Fortunately I tested it beforehand!
One other disadvantage is that fact that you cannot use the navigation with gloves on. being touch seisitive, it does not respond with any form of material over your hand. The 'hold' function is useful in preventing accidental navigation - its a simple switch which is difficult to flick accidentally.
Overall, it is a very useful thing to have and as well as this, to put it simply, it just looks good. The slim and sexy design makes it thaqt much more desirable. However, at £115, you have to be really sure you'd want it. I think it is just about worth the money, but if you're in doubt, check out other brands and models too - don't pay for anythoing you think isnt necessary to you.
