Initially I bought this for my commute to work. Having owned a IPod video 30 gig which suffered long term abuse, and being dropped countless times - I decided to splash out and treat myself.
The IPod classic - well, there is not much difference functionality then the IPod video.

Opening any product made by apple is a joy in itself - one does wonder how long they deliberate over the pretty box! Getting over the box design, the IPod is neatly presented - with the contents kept in individual packaging.

Once I tapped the play button, the usual setup menu was a welcoming sight and I continued the usual setup process. However you can setup the IPod by hooking it directly to the laptop and launching ITunes.

Synced the IPod up to my library - and have been happy since! The audio quality is excellent, sync times are more then adequate and it certainly holds it charge! However the '40 hours' quoted by apple is a little ambitious - however if you configure your iPod properly you will get a decent charge. (tip: This can be achieved by going to the settings menu, look at changing the backlight timer and turn the clicks off and the battery should last longer).

The menu system has been brought into 07-08 and is pretty much similar to the old system and easy to use. The finish is metal with a matt finish (black) - and the headphones are the bog standard white iPod headphones. With the welcome addition of coverflow!

If you like cover flow - I experienced problems in getting all the artwork for my library. I found a little cheat where you delete album artwork for ALL albums/artists (select all... right click...select 'clear album artwork') then select all again and click 'get album artwork' - this did take a while... but worked! Whilst coverflow looks nice I don't think it adds extra functionality to the IPod... more a space draining quirk! It does look awesome though ;-)

Sound playback is the usual high standard - but this is really down to you, the user - I have all my imported (off CD) music set to apple loss-less. Which will take up more space, but with 160 GIGS to play with... it is not a great deal more! It must be said - the headphones supplied are useless... get some Sennheiser CX300 - the added clarity is noticeable - and you do not need it as loud! The hat trick is that the ear buds stay in my ear when I am working out.

Video playback; to test this I ripped Family Guy from dvd to IPod using the ImToo software package. Quality was good - but KILLS your battery! So not ideal for international flights!

Unfortunately - as with anything, I do have some criticism:

Crashes my car stereo:
This - is infuriating beyond being 'quirky' - If the iPod is connected to my car stereo via aux in and I have the stereo set to iPod - the stereo crashes! I have to disconnect and restart the car THEN connect the iPod to the stereo - weird... and god knows why it has started doing this!

Photo connector:
With my old video IPod I could backup my photos whilst on holiday - the new iPod is not compatible with the adapter... which is a great shame... and if I had known this I would of probably spent less money and got the 80 gig version. I was pretty gutted with what was once a great idea used by few....

Scratches:
So you have your nice new IPod... and you pick it up and look at it (as most gadget geeks do!)... As soon as you will put it down without protection - the bare metal backing will be scratched within 5 minutes! When you buy the IPod - invest in a Belkin outer shell - in the right place you can get these for £10 or less!

Weight:
I am no weakling - however, attach this to a lanyard and you have a dead weight around your neck! So not ideal for the gym - but IDEAL for bus journeys or just sitting in your pocket!

Battery Life:
As stated before, the lifetime of a single charge is poor during video playback... consider less than 4 hours as a guideline - so don't expect to fit in lord of the rings extended in one charge.

Overall - a fantastic addition to the IPod range... and the space is such a luxury! Build quality is almost artistic and menu design is the usual high standard.

However - there are some niggles under the surface - which is a great shame. But with this version - there is no way that I will go to the competition!

4.9/5 From me
