The Product
= = = = = =
I recently had my birthday and my boyfriend bought me a new iPod as I was in need of a new one. The one I did have was (I think) one of the first iPod Nano’s and the buttons on it were starting to stick. It was also starting to look rather tatty as well. The iPod I am reviewing is an iPod Nano 7th Generation and is the thinnest iPod ever made at just 5.4mm thick and is only 31g in weight. It has a 2.5inch touch screen and is Bluetooth enabled. Like other iPods you can still have photos and videos on here and there is also a pedometer on this iPod as well. This iPod has a new, smooth anodised aluminium design which comes in a range of different colours making it look and feel very sleek. This review is based on the 16GB iPod Nano which I imagine holds at least 4000 songs. I don’t have a huge amount of songs on my iTunes anyway but it’s good to know that it holds a good amount of songs for when I do add new songs on there every so often. The iPod comes in a white and clear plastic box which holds the iPod and you also get a white set of headphones as well as the USB cable to connect the iPod to your computer or to charge it. There is also a small leaflet giving you basic information on how to use the iPod and the different features. The iPod comes in a few different colours including Space Grey, Blue White/Silver, Gold and Pink.

My boyfriend purchased this from Currys/PC World for £119.00. You can also purchase this from Amazon as well as Argos although prices may vary.

Getting Started
= = = = = = = =
I already had iTunes as I had another iPod so I actually went through my music library on there and got rid of some songs that I no longer listen to or didn't want on my new iPod. If you have never had an iPod before then you will need to download iTunes and then create an account in order to purchase music, etc. I put my iPod on charge and ensured that it was fully charged before switching it on using the button at the top. I set the time (which is displayed on the home screen at the top) and then just had a look at the iPod in general although as I hadn’t put anything on there, there wasn’t really a great deal to look at anyway. When setting the time you can choose from 18 different clock faces. As this is touch screen I purchased some screen protectors on Amazon just to give the touch screen a little more protection when using it and when it’s in my bag, etc. I also purchase a protective gel cover for it as well. The button on the top of the iPod can be used to switch it on/off and can also be used to make the iPod sleep/wake. Press this button once to sleep/wake the screen (music will keep playing) or press and hold for a few seconds for the iPod to switch off/on. There is a button on the left hand side of the iPod which is your volume up and down button and the button in between these play or pauses a track. The home button which takes you to the main screen is the round button at the bottom central part of the iPod and there is a headphone jack to the left of this underneath the iPod. The charging port can be found to the right.

Synch with iTunes
= = = = = = = = =
To sync your new iPod with iTunes you need to plug the smaller end of the cable into the bottom of the iPod and then the other into your computer/tablet. You will then need to switch the iPod on by holding the top button and it should say something like ‘Synching, do not disconnect’. Your computer will probably automatically open iTunes if you already have it installed on your phone and it may take a few minutes to install software to enable you to sync your new iPod with the latest version of iTunes. When plugging mine it, it spent a couple of minutes doing a software update as well which it will do every so often when you plug it in to sync with your computer. Once iTunes has recognised your iPod you will need to read the terms and conditions and then tick the box saying you agree before you can do anything else such as add songs to your iPod. I wanted all the songs in my iTunes library synched onto my iPod so I ticked this box and the songs started to copy onto my iPod. I only had about 76 songs so it didn’t take very long. When doing this it will say on the screen of the iPod that it’s synching and to not disconnect the iPod from the computer. Once the sync has been complete it will say so and you can then press the eject button next to the iPod symbol in iTunes. It’s important that you press the eject button rather than just pulling the cable out of the iPod or the laptop as this can cause problems with the iPod.

Listening to Music
= = = = = = = = =
You can listen to music by artist; album and you can create your own play lists. I normally put the iPod on shuffle which means it will play every song in a mixed/random order. The name of the song and the artist will appear on the screen of the iPod along with the front cover of the album it’s from. You can pause or skip onto the next track if you don’t want to listen to a particular song. On the iPod there is something called ‘Genius Mixes’ which is a selection of the songs on your iPod which go great together. You can create a ‘Genius Playlist’ from the current song. You can edit any playlists that you make. When listening to music I normally just choose shuffle and let the music play. I often start the shuffle mode and then press the sleep button on the top so that the screen will go to sleep. It’s easy to turn the volume up and down on the side of the iPod when listening to music. The headphones that come with the iPod are white in colour and are comfortable to wear. The earphone pieces stay securely in my ear without falling out when listening to music. There is no separate volume control on the headphone lead like you get with some others but this didn’t really bother me too much. The headphone cable is a good length and when listening to music, it’s crystal clear. I sometimes plug a speaker into the iPod to listen to music at work and at my boyfriends and again the music is always very clear. You can pair this iPod with Bluetooth headphones and speakers and even with a Bluetooth enabled sound system in your car if you have one.

Videos/Photos
= = = = = = =
You can add videos and photos to the iPod but this isn’t something I have done so I can’t comment on how easy it is to do this but I assume it’s straight forward and quite simple to do.

FM Radio
= = = =
To use the radio you need to plug the headphones in, in order to get reception. You can then swipe the radio dial to change stations. If you tap the star symbol this sets favourite radio stations. There are live pause controls that can rewind or pause live radio. I’ve not set this up and to be honest I am not sure that I will as I get a little bored of listening to the radio which is part of the reason why I wanted a new iPod in the first place.

Fitness
= = =
The iPod has a built in pedometer and you can set a daily step goal or start time, distance or calorie based run. Before using this it will ask you to put in your height and weight. You don’t have to do this but it keeps more of an accurate track of your fitness when using the pedometer. When using the pedometer on the screen you can see how many steps you have done/are doing, the calories burnt, distance and also the duration of walking, etc.

Overall Opinion
= = = = = = = =
I have been very pleased with my iPod so far and haven’t come across any issues with it and to be honest I don’t expect to or at least not for a long time yet. I love the fact that the iPod is small and it’s very thin meaning it’s perfect for putting into the pocket of my exercise leggings when I go running. The small size of the iPod also means that it’s perfect to fit into a pocket, as it won’t take up much room. The look of the iPod is very nice and it looks very sleek, especially in the Space Grey colour which I got the iPod in. The touch screen has a very good response in terms of when you touch it. Even though I have put a screen protector on it the touch screen still works perfectly. The screen itself is very sharp and clear. The iPod itself is easy to set up and use, even if you have never owned an iPod before and setting the iPod up doesn’t take too long. When I first synched the songs from my iTunes onto my iPod which was only about 85 songs, it didn’t take very long to sync. The iPod is also compact and very light in terms of weight so if you do go running occasionally it might be worth getting one of those armbands where you can slip the iPod into. There are cheaper iPods available and you can probably purchase a restored or 2nd hand iPod cheaper than this one but this one is lovely and it’s so sleek, modern and easy to use that I think it’s worth the money. If you need a new iPod or haven’t got one and are looking into getting one I would definitely recommend this particular iPod. I would also recommend purchasing a screen protector and possibly a small case/cover for it as well to help protect it from dust or scratches.

Product Information : Apple iPod nano (7 Gen) 16 GB

Manufacturer's product description

About the size of a credit card - and just 5.4 mm thin - the iPod nano is the thinnest iPod ever made. The 2.5-inch multi-touch display is nearly twice as big as the display on the previous iPod nano, so you can see more of the music, photos, and videos you love. Buttons let you quickly play, pause, change songs, or adjust the volume. The smooth anodized aluminum design makes iPod nano feel as good as it sounds.
