I bought the iPod Shuffle3rd generation has I wanted a small and lightweight MP3 player to take to the gym to make my workouts pass more quickly. The iPodShuffle 3rd Generation is available in black or silver. I can whole heartedly recommend this to anyone wanting a small and lightweight MP3 player to take to the gym. With the extremely useful spring clip on the back of the Shuffle it is possible to clip it to the pocket of your shorts or clip it on to your T shirt, you really do not know you are carrying it around, it is that small and light.
Right I will now describe the various buttons on the iPod Shuffle 3rd generation.....
Well this won't take long has there is only one control on the iPod Shuffle 3rd generation and
that is the combination on/off switch, the other two positions on the switch are for to play the tracks in the order they were imported on to the iPod or you can flick it to its last position and then the iPod will shuffle the songs and play them in a totally random order. Next to the switch I have just described is the earphone socket, I am going to go a little off topic for the time being but the headphones supplied with any of the iPod range in my opinion are totally inadequate. I decided to purchase an aftermarket pair, I chose a pair of the new Apple In The Ear earphones, the difference in sound quality with these compaired to the bundled earphones was amazing and I mean amazing. With the in the ear pair the volume did not need to be turned up has high and the bass and overall sound quality was light years ahead, once you have determined the correct sized pad (to ensure a good seal/fit, this is vitally important) they were very comfortable and as I have mentioned the sound quality is AMAZING. The aftermarket In The Earphones I purchased have controls on the right wire to allow you to turn the volume up or down, skip tracks backwards or forwards, the included earphones that come with the iPod Shuffle 3rd generation also have these same controls.
Right now back on to topic..
The rest of the iPod Shuffle 3rd generation is completely buttonless, the way you control it i.e. play, turn volume up or down skip tracks is done via the little remote control that is attached to the right wire of the earphones, now if like me you are going to be using your iPod in the gym when working out, you will definitely find this control method an excellent idea, it is possible to have access to all these controls without looking at the iPod. To describe the size of the iPod Shuffle 3rd generation, I would describe it to be about three quarters the size of a stick of chewing gum and about the same width and roughly twice has thick, the iPod Shuffle 3rd Generation is completely metal in construction and it feels very solidly and well made, it is available in either black or silver.
The iPod Shuffle 3rd generation has no screen, now some people might find this a problem, but personally I didn't, I basically wanted to switch my iPod on and then just listen to it, the last thing I wanted to be having to do when working out was to keep looking at the screen so as I could access the songs etc. A neat feature with the iPod Shuffle 3rd generation is that if you press the centre part of the remote control down for a second it will speak the name of the song and also the artist, a bit of a gimmick maybe but handy if you are wondering who sings that particular song.
The various controls on the remote are:
Press the centre part and it will play or pause when you are listening to music. Press the same part twice in quick succession and it will skip forward, press three times in quick succession and it will skip back. Press and hold the centre part for a second and it will speak the track name and artist of that particular song.
Next on the remote is a + & - button, these are used to turn the volume up or down.
To get the songs you want on to your iPod Shuffle 3rd generation, you use the now familiar and in my opinion excellent iTunes program. I was a little surprised to find that there was no iTunes CD, admittedly a lot of the time these are way out of date by the time the products are shipped but a quick download of iTunes from Apple's website and I was OK.
Supplied with the iPod Shuffle 3rd generation is a pair of Apple's earphones which in my opinion are letting down the iPod in the sound department.
A USB cable that plugs into the earphone socket of the iPod Shuffle 3rd generation, the other end plugs into a USB port on your PC, this charges the battery. I find the battery takes around 2 hours to fully charge. You can also purchase an electric adaptor that plugs into an electric socket, the USB lead I have previously mentioned plugs into this and it is then possible to charge the iPod via the electricity supply. My other half has this adaptor for her iPod and most of the time I use this adaptor to charge my iPod Shuffle 3rd generation up. The quoted battery life of the iPod Shuffle 3rd generation is 10 hours and I find this to be accurate. Some people may find 10 hours battery life to be a bit low, but you have got to realise that due to the minute size of the iPod Shuffle 3rd generation it is not going to be possible to fit a battery in from say the Nano to enable a longer battery life, but 10 hours is more than adequate in my opinion.
Well that's about it really I think I have covered everything.
If you are wanting an extremely small and lightweight and beautifully styled MP3 player then this is the one for you. Just bear in mind that the included earphones do not in my opinion provide the greatest of sound quality, so you may find the need to purchase an aftermarket pair, I can HIGHLY RECOMMEND the Apple In The Ear earphones.

I couldn't agree more with you regarding the supplied earphones Hishyeness. Its ludicrous that something has beautifully designed, well made and has user friendly as the iPod can then be let down by the earphones, this is the most important part has this is how we listen to the music.
Its about time in my opinion that Apple started bundling all iPods with their new and excellent In The Ear earphones, if they did this I think it would make the iPod even more popular.

The 'phones are the weak point on most of Apples MP3 players. I usually bin them and buy replacements straight away to do my music justice. Nicely reviewed 8^)
