What do you buy the person who has everything? It’s quite simple really, an I-Pod Shuffle, a new portable MP3 players from those lovely people at Apple.

Although as rare as rocking horse s**t at the moment, these little beauties are available direct from Apple online at http://www.apple.com/uk/ipodshuffle/. There are two versions of the Shuffle and are priced dependent upon their memory and song storage capacity. The love of my life decided that I needed to move into the digital age and purchased the 512MB Shuffle for the princely sum of £69, making this significantly cheaper than the i-Pod and i-Pod Mini.

The 512MB version stores up to 120 songs, which roughly equates to 10 albums. Visually the Shuffle is minimalist, white in colour it has the simplest controls and looks as though it is a remote control for a larger i-Pod rather than an MP3 player in its own right. I actually thought my better half had lost her marbles and bought me a remote control!

Weighing in at just over 20 grams, the Shuffle is 0.8cm thick and 8cm long. It fits easily into the palm of my hand and makes it extremely portable. It sits neatly in my shirt pocket and isn’t noticeable at all. If you think of the weight of say 5 cash/credit cards in your top pocket you get some idea of some little this actually weighs.

Controlled via a plastic button circled in rubber, it has the basic controls of play/pause, forward and backwards. The circle is also used to increase and decrease the volume. Both practical and functional, this actually looks rather basic but it doesn’t need to have anything else. The people at Apple have stuck to their design plan and it has indeed paid off.

As for durability, what can I say? Although it is made of plastic, it doesn’t seem brittle at all and I can imagine this taking a good hammering prior to laying down it’s life. It is a well-built piece of technology that cared for, would last for years.

To keep the design and size to a minimum, the Shuffle does not have an LCD screen. In fact, it doesn’t actually have a built in hard drive it uses a flash memory. Songs are installed onto the Shuffle by removing the end to expose the built in USB port and attaching it to your PC. The software required to download the songs is enclosed with the product and it literally takes 5 minutes to install. Rather than use the i-Pod store, I copied my favourite CD’s to my PC and then installed them. Installing two CD’s onto the Shuffle took around 5 minutes and most of this was taken up by the time taken to upload the songs to my PC. The actual installation process to the Shuffle is almost instantaneous.

It looks the part and is exceptionally practical, but that would count for nothing if the sound quality fell short. It didn’t!! The sound quality is crystal clear and I hadn’t in fact heard such clarity or sounds for years and certainly not from a machine that cost £69.

The earphones that are supplied are adequate, and do have the potential to annoy those people around you. For the sake of keeping your hearing it is advisable to ensure that the volume is at a reasonable level prior to plugging them in. The volume does go very loud.

On the reverse of the Shuffle you have the on/off switch which also controls whether you wish to play your songs in order or via the “Shuffle” system. This basically selects tracks at random. Personally, I prefer to use the ordered system so that I can locate tracks easily. A battery light is also present to indicate the charge remaining. The i-Pod has a rechargeable battery (which charges when plugged into a PC) with a 12-hour life, and I have found this to be faultless.

So, overall this is a handy bit of equipment for commuters, fitness fanatics and those who wish to listen to music without bugging the people in the flat downstairs. It is everything you would want from a portable MP3 player. Ignore the lack of screen and the games that come with the i-Pod and i-Pod Mini. This is all you need. One the tunes are playing, you’ll drift away and forget about all the other players on the market.

Personally I have no reservations in wholeheartedly recommending this product but would point out a 1GB version is available which stores up to 240 songs. For my needs this is perfect, but for those with larger music collections I would suggest they look at the next model up. Regardless of this fact, you must look at the i-Pod Shuffle if you need a portable MP3 player. You will not be disappointed.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Thanks for taking the time to read and rate.

Advantages: Cheap and Easy
Disadvantages: A little too basic for some?

...except for a pale grey Apple logo on the back and the distinctive iPod-style control ‘wheel’ is a slightly darker shade of off white. Controls are basic. On the front of the player are the buttons play/pause, previous/rewind, next/fast-forward and volume up/down. On the reverse is a switch that allows you to flick between ‘play in order’, ‘shuffle’ or ‘off’. There’s also a button to press to display the battery status. Does it come with any accessories? ...

When I ordered mine, not long after launch, they estimated it would be delivered in 3-4 weeks from the time I placed my order but it arrived - impressively - within the week. A quick look at the website today shows they are currently quoting delivery in 5-7 days. ... Read review

Advantages: small,lightweight,doubles as memory stick.
Disadvantages: no screen.

For a while i considered buying an ipod but have been detered by the size, weight and price of the ipods, that were currently on the market at the time. So it was the ipod shuffle for me,i bought it about 3 months ago from pc world in aberdeen and paid £45 for it. Well a unique selling point of the ipod shuffle was the fact that it did,nt have a screen.Which means of course you can not see a playlist of your music. The idea behind the ipod shuffle ...
...The first thing that i noticed was its great design, vaule for money, and the fact that all my mates thought it was smart. Disadvantages: No display for songs list

For a while i considered buying an iPod but have been detered by the size, wieght and price of the iPods that were currently out at the time,so for me it was ideal when the iPod shuffle was introduced. The iPod boasts at being only 0.78 ounces and just 0.33 inches thin,so was ideal for what i was looking for in terms of weight and size. Shuffle because life is random
Review of Apple iPod shuffle 512 MB by bigbullyboy

Advantages: lightwight, compact, holds 120 songs and has great sound quality
Disadvantages: no LCD display

My mum bought my i-Pod Shuffle as a gift about 18 months ago and it cost £79. The reasoning for buying it was because I kept complaining that my discman was heavy and jumped around when I went jogging and the music in my gym was great if you are into acid house and RnB. I have the 512MB version of the Shuffle and it has the capacity to hold 120 songs, that is around 9 full albums of music and in my opinion more than enough for one person who does ...
...on a quick run and for an hour at night when at the gym. The software is idiot proof and took next to no time to put on my PC. Rather than use i-tunes, I just copied albums I already owned onto the software and transferred it to the Shuffle. It has a built in USB to slot straight into the PC. In my opinion, the best features of the Shuffle are that it is compact (about the same size as a pack of chewing gum), weighs very little (20g), it plays ... Read review

A very handy iPod Shuffle that's worth owning!
Review of Apple iPod shuffle 512 MB by  pk_banana

Advantages: Small, light, easy to use
Disadvantages: No display of song information

...I bought my iPod shuffle about three months ago, when I suddenly realised that I it's time to have some music to listen to while waiting for anything. I'm a person who gets bored and stressed easily without any music. Already have access to music at home and in my car, but what about when going out for a walk, shopping and even sunbathing? I always wanted an iPod, coz it has the ability to store so many music on them, but an iPod would just cost me too much while browsing on the net for MP3 players. Then I cam across the iPod Shuffle, which can store up to 240 songs if you get the 1GB iPod, which to me was more than enough as you can change and upload new songs onto it whenever wanted. The price was also good to me, so I went for it. Got it the next day delivered and was so excited to discover all the features and stuff. First you... Read review

iPod Shuffle
Review of Apple iPod shuffle 512 MB by  gang-brawl

Advantages: Music on the go, very lightweight
Disadvantages: Can be annoying not knowing whats on it!

...I've always wanted an iPod of some sort - I had a HDD Mp3 player which was a different brand and ended up sending it back because it just wasn't worth the hassle. When I saw that I could get a 512mb iPod Shuffle free with my new 02 phone (which I was buying anyway) I ordered it straight away. When I first opened the box I couldn't believe the size and weight of it - it really is just like a packet of chewing gum! It comes with a normal cap for over the USB (connects to your PC/notebook with both USB 1.1 and 2.0) connector, a cap with a white lanyard attached to it, fantastic quality 'bud' earphones, installation disks and electronic documentation with a copy of iTunes (although when I installed this my computer informed me that there was a new version available, so you may have to upgrade iTunes when you install). IPOD SHUFFLE
Review of Apple iPod shuffle 512 MB by  oladlow

Advantages: SMALL
Disadvantages: CANT SELECT TRACK

...The Apple iPod was released a while back now but one thing has stayed the same. The silly price. £250 - £350 for an MP3 player I could never spend that much regardless of style. And now the perfect product for everyone the new iPod shuffle sporting a small price of only £69.99 (512mb) to £99.99 (1GB). In my opinion this little baby is even more stylish than the iPod cos it is so damn small! Seeing is believing but in this review I cant show you it but just let me say its no bigger than a pack of gum (seen in apples ad for it). With the little shuffle you get a neckband, the iPod white earphones and iTunes CD. The neckband makes conceiling the shuffle simple but to let passers by know you own an iPod you get the mug me im an ipod owner earphones which offer exceptional sound quality and style. iTunes is easy to use you can either...
