If you're not made of money (literally) then this is a great alternative to the iPhone, sure it doesn't have a phone in but that does mean you aren't tied down which give you less reason to hack it and ultimately less opportunity to brick it.
I think if you are going to buy this product first gen then I think you are going have to buy it and be happy with it, because you know that Apple are going to come out with one smaller and better shortly after you buy it. So if you really want it now, go out and get one.
Personally as you can get double the capacity for not much more then I think you are properly better off getting the 16GB version. What you are paying for here is not the iPod, it's the User Interface. When you start to play with this device you can see that its clearly worth the dosh you laid down for it. Two words people, simply beautiful!
In conclusion this is for the people who have enough sense not to buy and iPhone but still want that "o-so-lickable" interface that everyone is hoping that will revolutionise the small hand held device market.
