The iPod Touch is Apple's latest entry into the MP3 player/ portable media player market. Not only does it sport standard features found in existing iPod's and other brands, it takes a completely new approach to the user interface and functionality of this type of hardware.
Firstly, and most importantly, Apple have ditched their standard user interface, which consisted of physical buttons and a touch-sensitive 'wheel' for navigation, and have instead adopted a large, ingenious multi-touch screen. As the name of the product suggests, this means the device is centred upon the user's ability to navigate and use the iPod by tapping, dragging, twisting and 'flicking' items on-screen. It's particularly good for those who aren't happy with having to use buttons, because it is more of a natural "touch what you want to do" interface. It is highly responsive, and allows features such as keyboards to become purely software based rather than being a physical piece of hardware.
This has also allowed the iPod to have more features than ever. An internet browser would have been impossible previously, but now with such a dynamic interface it has become a key feature of the Touch. The Touch has WiFi, so the internet is available at any open access points. There are various other additions, including the ability to browse photos by pulling them across the screen, and even using two fingers to stretch the image.
The iPod itself is very attractive; there isn't any criticism to make about the design at all. It's the perfect size for most people to hold, and despite being fairly glossy, won't get too dirty. The only criticism here is that because the screen cover is glass, it weighs the device down a fair bit. Not excessively though. As for the battery; well, it could have been better, but provided you keep WiFi usage to a minimum, you shouldn't have much trouble.
As for music and video; as always, the sound quality is great, although the earphones may disappoint some, as there simply isn't enough bass. Video support once again is very limited; you'll be forced to use Apple's Quicktime codec once again, but to be fair you'd probably need to convert most videos for any player. Quality of video playback isn't something I could do anything but praise. But the massive drawback is the storage available. 8GB is simply not enough, not only for what you'll be storing, but for what you're paying. If you plan on putting DVD movies onto the Touch, then you'll need to be very conservative with space. Those with larger music collections may struggle to even fit that onto the Touch.
Overall, the iPod Touch is a more than just a glimpse of the future of portable gadgets, it's a massive step into it. With such innovation as this, you'll leave yourself and friends stunned, but of course at a price. The only thing in the way of the iPod Touch being the ultimate media device is the limited storage and price, but to some, these are factors which will not apply.
