If it was not for the fact that I needed more than 16GB at the time of buying my 160GB iPod Classic, I would've bought one of these. Obviously now, there is the 32GB iPod Touch, but this is still not enough. The iPod touch therefore is for people who have some money to spend and just want to put their CD's onto the iPod. It is packed with features and in essence is a PDA without the office applications. It comes pre-loaded with Safari (Apple's own web browser), the iTunes store, built in iPod, a special YouTube application for viewing Youtube videos and many other features.
Firstly, while I'm thinking about it, the iPod touch doesn't come with a flash player, which is the reason why there's a special YouTube application. This means that when browsing safari, you can't watch embedded video clips or clips off other video sharing sites such as Dailymotion. This, obviously, is a drawback. Hopefully, Apple will look into sorting this out for future versions. Other than that, the Safari browser is very good. It's fairly quick, like other browsers, it depends on your connection speed as to how fast your pages load.
The iTunes store is a great inclusion on the device. I like the idea that you can be sitting out with your friends and if someone mentions a good song or you hear a good song then you can just access your iTunes and purchase the song (provided your in a wi-fi hotspot). It's really good. You can then listen to it using the iPod feature, which is what the device is built around. But the other functions kind of put the iPod section into the shadows.
The touch screen is very responsive and so far, using my brothers 8GB version, I haven't encountered any problems with the screen. Again, like all iPods, the back is very prone to scratches. My brother keeps his in a case but in the few days before he bought the case, it picked up a few scratches, despite it being rarely used. It comes with a motion sensor built in that detects tilting of the iPod and will respond by changing the orientation of the screen, so you can either view your videos, cover flow or web browser in landscape or portrait. A nice little touch (no pun intended).
The other functions are great additions, very easy to use and easy to access. The onscreen keyboard is a bit hard to use at times, especially when you're in a rush. With the on screen keys being very small, I'd say they were designed to be used with a stylus, but there aren't any stylus' compatible with the iPod Touch as far as I know.
Yes it comes with a few setbacks, but if you have enough music to fit on the iPod and want something that comes with bells and whistles, then this is a great device. The design is great, the functionality is great and the only thing it's really missing, is the phone feature from the iPhone.
