At release, the ipod touch was the iphone's poor cousin. However, with subsequent firmware releases, more and more features have been added. Now, with firmware 2.0, the app store has brought the ipod touch alive. With the applications that are available to download, the ipod touch is a genuine alternative to the iphone.
I don't expect my ipod to be a computer but the ipod touch tries to be. Needless to say, it fails to meet this aim. However, once you start to look at the ipod touch as an ipod with some useful applications, WI-FI and a good web-browser, it begins to make much more sense. Please, don't expect your ipod touch to be a replacement for a computer. It isn't. If you want to browse the web quickly or check your e-mail account, the ipod touch is fine, but for extended use, it really isn't suitable.
Sound quality is acceptable but I would recommend that you replace the earphones as the standard ipod ones are rather lacking in quality. Video is good - the screen is vibrant enough and for the size of the screen, watching video is quite a pleasing experience.
With the addition of the app store and games, the ipod touch tries to be a portable games console as well and you guessed it; it isn't one of those either. I wish Apple would stop marketing the ipod touch as things that it isn't. The best way to work out whether the ipod touch is for you or not is to decide whether you can cope with the limited storage, If you can, then you should take a long, hard look at what you think the ipod touch is. If you see it is an ipod with a touchscreen and a few useful features, then buy away! If you want it to be a computer, then you should look to buy a small laptop.
