I was asked what I wanted for Christmas, and when I answered with 'money', my proposal was turned down. I suppose in some ways asking for money can be a bit selfish. Parents don't get the thrill of seeing their children's' faces on Christmas morning as they rip into their presents, the parents anxious to see if they have bought the right thing. So I gave it some thought and still couldn't think of anything. Though around three weeks before Christmas, I went to switch on my old iPod Nano, only to find that it would not react. The battery must have finally seen its days. Then it hit me - I'll ask for the new iPod Touch!

Apple launched the first iPod Touch in September 2007. The 2nd Generation iPod Touch was later released in September of 2008 after the success of the first. It is currently available in three memory sizes; 8GB, 16GB and 32GB. It is available for both Mac and Windows systems.

Buying the iPod, I thought, would be a challenge. Since my Dad didn't actually know what the Touch was, it was up to me to find it for him. I had read a review on how it could be purchased on the Apple website with free postage, so I decided to give it a look. There it was, the 8GB, for £169. This was quite expensive, but it was plenty of memory so I decided to get that one. When you buy, there is an option for free engraving on the back. I decided to go for this option too, with the words, '(Amy)' with 'Showgirl' underneath. I hoped it looked okay. I didn't bother going for the £3 gift wrap option!

Knowing that I was getting the iPod, I was so excited come Christmas Day. I only hoped that it had arrived in the post safely, as things do often get lost of damaged during the Christmas rush! Though when I unwrapped my second last gift, indeed it was my iPod, in a little cardboard box. I opened up the box to reveal the classic iPod plastic casing the iPod came in. It was much larger than my original Nano, though not much heavier. I took off the plastic top from the case, and held the iPod in my hand. On top of the screen it had a little plastic cover on it to protect it. I peeled this off to reveal the shiny screen. I turned it over to have a look at the back. A delight with the iPod Touch is that the back of it is actually a mirror! As one who I must admit is quite vain, this almost creates perfection in the gadget! Then I spotted it, the engraving, close to the top of the iPod! It was much smaller than I had imagined, though it was easy to read nonetheless. Thankfully it looked great!

I rummaged in the plastic case to see what I was provided with: earphones, connector for computer/laptop, a plastic stand for the iPod, and a little black cloth to wipe the screen. This little cloth was a nice surprise, as I didn't know it was included and I do like to keep things clean! There was a little instruction booklet, but this basically told you how to add Apps to your iPod, and how to charge it. This booklet also came in another language, though which I don't know! I could hazard a guess though! There was also a little Product Information Guide, which tells you about license agreements etc.

I wasn't able to go and use my iPod straight away, as I was going out, but as soon as I had the chance, the laptop was turned out, ready to go! I had previously downloaded iTunes ready for getting the iPod, but if you don't, then you are asked if you wish to download iTunes on inserting the cable into the laptop. The wire goes at the bottom of the iPod, and the other end at a 2.0 USB port. As most systems come with several of these ports, this is unlikely to create a problem.

There are several ways you can upload music to your iTunes. You can do this by inserting and importing songs from CDs, or you can purchase from iTunes. If you have any songs on your system you can also add them by importing a file. The iPod can also store movies and TV shows, as well as pod casts. Again these can be purchased from iTunes or uploaded from your computer. A new feature for the Touch is the Apps feature. These are downloaded from the App Store, accessible from iTunes. These are categorised so you can find them easier, such as Music, Health, and Sport. There are hundreds of Apps to choose from, some you have to pay for and others are free. I don't bother paying for any, and I have some pretty good free Apps on my iPod. My favourites include Eye Tricks, which is as it sounds! There is a big list of eye tricks for you to choose from, which can keep you amused for hours! I also really like the Labyrinth one, where you have to guide a little marble around a labyrinth, avoiding holes, by tilting your iPod. Though my favourite is the LightSaber. With this, you move your iPod around, and as you do so, it makes a Lightsaber noise! You can even customise the Lightsaber image that appears on your screen! You also have the option to store pictures from your computer onto your iPod too.

To upload the music, apps and so on to your iPod, you simply sync your iPod to iTunes. You have the choice to do this automatically when you plug the iPod in, but if you do not choose to do this, you just click on the Sync button on the iPod page in iTunes! It couldn't be simpler! This is where you can also see how much memory your iPod has left. Currently I have 158 songs, 30 Apps, and 59 photos, but still 6.06 GB free! I think this is pretty good! In all the iPod is said to be able to store 1,750 songs, 10,000 photos, 10 hours of video play or a combination. That, I feel, is quite good for 8GB!

There are other features of the Touch which make it amazing too! It has built-in internet, also known as Safari, which you can access if you connect up to Wi-Fi! It's quite quick too and you can access any website you wish, there are no limitations!

It also comes with various features you see on the home screen (you can access this instantly by pressing the single button on the front of the iPod). It comes with a calendar, contacts list, Stocks, Maps, Weather, a Clock, a Calculator, Notes, and Youtube too! Some of which may not be too useful to you, but it's nice that they have been provided!

There is also a Settings section, which you can go and tamper with! Here you can change the brightness of the screen, change your wallpaper, and even set a password lock for your iPod. You can also change various settings under the Music, Video and Photo headings! These settings simply help to make the iPod more enjoyable and personal.

I often took my Nano on long walks, as I will be doing with this one. This means it is important that it does not die on me when I'm out and about. But does it have a good battery life? Well with audio it is said to last for around 36 hours. I have only charged my iPod once since Christmas Day and only now is the battery on 20%, so I feel this is correct. It also is said to have 6 hours video play time which is quite reasonable as well.

Of course this 2nd gen iPod costs a little more than the original Touch. For 8GB the original is priced at around £120, which is quite a bit less. So why should you pay that bit more for the newer model? Are there any real differences? There are actually a few differences! To start with, the 2nd gen has a rounded back, where before it was a flat mirror only. It also has a built-in speaker, and volume controls at the side, allowing you to listen to music and videos without the headphones plugged in. The volume is quite good, and it can be heard over the noise of the traffic when outside even with just one earphone in your ear! It's easy to lock too, simply doing so by clicking the button on the top of the iPod. To switch off, you simply hold this along for longer and slide along the screen when prompted! It couldn't be easier! Reading up on Wikipedia, it says the iPod supports Bluetooth because of the WiFi, however it also states that Apple have not actually said this, so it is a feature I would not suggest used! Other than that, there are no real differences! However it does feel good to have an upgraded model from my friend, as I am usually the last to advance technologically!

There are obviously going to be issues with this iPod. As it is touch screen, it will get covered in fingerprints quite quickly. However with a simple wipe of the cloth provided, these can be removed. Unfortunately any scratches cannot. I already have two scratches on my iPod, but luckily they are on the back rather than the screen itself. Its best that the iPod is kept protected, whether in a case or an iSock. I didn't seen the point in paying as little as £10 for an iSock, and i didn't like the leather cases available so I created my own! Yes, my iPod lives inside an actual sock - a little navy trainer sock never worn! Thankfully, I can fit it into a little trainer sock, inside my jacket pocket, as it is not too big! In fact, the iPod itself measures 11cm by 5cm, with a thickness of just 5mm!

So where can you purchase this from? Well you can buy it from Apple themselves like I did, but many other shops sell it, including Argos and Curries. I'd image other computer stores would sell them, but I also know you can buy it in supermarkets too, including Asda and Tesco. It is quite widely available so you shouldn't have too big a problem tracking one down!

It's sleek, it's fun, it's amazing! This truly is the best creation from iPod, and I would recommend the Touch to anybody! I love it so much, in fact, that I decided to name it! I wanted to name it after Anna Faris, but didn't want to call it Anna, so I went for the name of her character in Friends, Erica. I never wish to be parted from my Erica! Definitely one of the greatest Christmas gifts ever, and well worth the money!
