--Background--
I bought the iPod touch for my son for his 10th birthday. Before he alerted me to the item I knew nothing at all about it. Having played around with it for a few hours, I can now see what all the fuss is about as this item is so addictive. The touch comes in 3 guises, namely 8Gb, 16Gb and 32Gb versions. These are all identical apart from, obviously the storage capacity.
--In the box--
I must admit that then the box came, I thought half the order had been missed as it is minute! Along with the ipod itself, you get the headphones, a usb to pc charger and a quick setup guide. Although this seem very little, it is actually enough to get you up and running in next to no time. As we bought this direct from the Apple store we were entitlted to free engraving on the back of the device. We took the decision to have his name, house number and post code engraved with the assumption that if it got lost/stolen there would be more chance of getting it returned.
--Setting up--
Setting up the touch is simple. If you havent got iTunes installed on your PC/Mac you will need to do this as it is needed to transfer any content from your computer to the touch. Once this is done, simply drag and drop your music/movies over the iPod Touch within iTunes and a few seconds later, the job is done. It really is that simple.
--Useage--
Applications bought off iTunes are installed directly to the touch but can be synchronised back to the computer for backup purposes. The touch comes preinstalled with plenty of quality programs. The Safari web browser is great if you have access to a wireless internet connection. This browser gives you all the functionality you require to browse on the move. It allows cookies and javascript to run and allows you to have upto 8 browser windows open at a time. The touch comes with its own Youtube application which allows you to watch videos without the need to use the Safari browser. Google maps is another standard feature which is great if you are lost as (with the aid of a wireless signal) you can pinpoint your exact location which I must admit I find fascinating. Zooming in on the maps is simple too, by placing your thump and forefinger of the screen and then pulling them apart will zoom the map. Also pushing these fingers together will zoom the map out. This functionality can also be used in the Safari browser. There are other functions which will be less commonly used such as getting the latest weather and a neat little Nike application which monitors how far you have walked, calories burnt, etc (you will need the additional bluetooth sensor for this). I havent really explored this in detail yet but it will be great for those of you looking to shed a few pounds as you can use the touch to listen to music and monitor your progress at the same time.
--Summary--
The iPod touch is not a cheap item but it is certainly of high quality which justifies its price. I would recommend this to anyone looking for an all round portable media experience whatever age or expertise in this field.
