I have wanted to buy myself a good MP3 player for a while but with so much choice on the market it was difficult to decide which one to buy. My family have owned several versions of the i-Pod nano over the years and we have always been happy with the performance. I was seduced by all of the additional features on the i-Pod touch, as well as being a music player you have video playback and many of the features of a PC in your pocket. I own the 3rd generation of i-Pod touch which was released in September 2009 and offers increased browsing speed and more features than previous models.

The i-Pod touch itself is a sleek and stylish player which most people would be happy to carry around. It is only available in chrome but if you buy directly from an Apple store you can have your i-Pod personalised free. I would advise anybody who buys an i-Pod touch to buy some kind of protective pouch for it as after only a few weeks the chrome on mine looks very dull and smudged. The screen is very tough and so far has not showed any signs of wear which is reassuring. The i-Pod touch only has one button on the front of the player to switch it on and also acts as a back button when you are using the player. I found that I picked the i-Pod touch up and it only took me a few seconds to work out how to scroll through all of the features so it is a dawdle to use.

You navigate around the features of the i-Pod touch by using the touch screen. The screen is 3.5 inches in size, as well as being able to use the screen orientated in a portrait way you can turn the i-Pod touch on it’s side and it will automatically sense this and allow you to use the screen horizontally. The small screen size is just big enough to allow you to play games and watch video playback comfortably without being too bulky in your bag or pocket. The display is brilliant quality giving nice crisp high quality images. The internal battery charges either via a USB port on your computer or via a docking station, the battery life is generally good but I find the claims that you can use it for 30 hours between charges is not true, normally it needs charged every evening after using it for video and the internet during the day. I have also found that using Wi-Fi connection means that the battery drains far more quickly.

Music Playback

You download music and other content to your iPod touch via iTunes. As well as buying content from the iTunes store you can add any music from your CD collection or computer onto the player easily. It is easy to sort your music into playlists once it has been loaded and the i-Pod touch lists all of your music alphabetically either by title or artist and you scroll through your collection from the touch screen picking what you want to play. It also stores the artwork from albums which is downloaded automatically from i-Tunes which is a nice touch. It makes sorting large music collections a piece of cake, the only downside is that when you are scrolling it can be easy to click on the wrong thing accidently. Music is backed up automatically on your computer iTunes library so that if for some reason you needed to reinstall everything then it would be easy to do.

There are two options provided for playing your music back on the i-Pod touch, the first being the provided headphones. I am not a fan of the apple in ear headphones, the sound quality is reasonable and I find them really uncomfortable to use. Luckily the headphone jack is a standard size so you can use any brand of headphones but I do wish they provided better headphones either as standard or for an extra charge. The second method is using the inbuilt speaker within the i-Pod touch, this are not brilliant as it is simply not loud enough as when my daughter was playing the i-Pod touch in the back of the car at full volume I struggled to hear it in the front. The third way to play the music on your i-Pod touch is to connect it to a docking station, this is my favourite method of listening and the i-Pod comes with a connector allowing it to be fitted to any brand of docking station.

Surfing The Internet

As well as being a music player the i-Pod touch allows you to connect via a Wi-Fi connection to the internet using the browser safari. I have found that when a Wi-Fi connection exists then it connects easily and the pages all load quickly. To enter a URL in the toolbar at the top of the page a small qwerty keyboard pops up, the keys are pretty small, I can manage to type with my fat fingers with a bit of difficulty but providing some kind of stylus as standard would be beneficial. The small screen size can cause a few problems when you are reading and clicking on links, it is easy to magnify areas of the pages by double tapping on a blank area within the page but when scrolling down the page or clicking on hyperlinks it is far too easy to click onto the wrong links by accident due to the small screen size.

I connect at home via my wireless connection and there are many Wi-Fi hotspots within major towns and cities these days which allow you to connect for free, for example I have connected to the internet in McDonalds, in a shopping centre and even when out and about in my village no doubt by piggybacking on someone’s unsecured connection. There are also various connections which you pay to use, it was one called cloud that popped up the other day and it was charging £4.99 for 30 minutes but I have not needed to pay for connection yet.

There is an application which allows you to automatically connect to You Tube so you can sign in and access all your favourite videos on the go. The connection here is always good, the playback good quality. You can also use the internet to access features like the BBC i-Player or Channel 4’s playback service to catch up on some TV viewing. Of course the small screen size does not make it as enjoyable as watching it at home but the brilliant screen resolution and good quality sound means that you could spend a train journey catching up on the episodes of Eastenders you have missed.

Maps

Google maps is a handy extra and it gives you all of the features that the web based application has. I used the maps a few days ago when I was in a strange city to see if they had branches of a shop I wanted to visit, the map told me that there was a branch of Lush 0.3 miles away from my location and also gave me a walking map to get there.

Using Google maps depends on having a Wi-Fi connection, I was disappointed that they do not have maps of the British Isles loaded onto your i-Pod touch that you can use when a connection is not available. Even when I do have a connection it seems unable to find my location on the map to give me directions so I have to input it manually. You can find directions to any UK location either driving on by foot but it will not replace a sat-nav for drivers.

Work On The Move

As well as having a range of features which are fun to play with you can also use it to work or stay connected on the move by sending emails, storing contacts, writing notes and keeping a track of your appointments on the go. I have found that these work based applications are easily synchronised with Microsoft Outlook meaning that you will not have to waste time duplicating information between two machines.

Applications

One of the best known features of the i-Pod touch is the ability to download applications via the iTunes store. When they say that there is an ap for everything they are serious as there is even an application to time the contractions of a woman in labour! Many applications are free from the iTunes store but for others there is a charge of up to £5, you do need to exercise caution when downloading aps as not all of them are licensed by reputable software companies.

The aps I have downloaded include tweetie which allows you to use your twitter account on your iPod as well as storing any tweets you write while offline to upload later. My daughter has downloaded speed guitar which allows her to practice her guitar chords, finger piano which lets her play tunes on a keyboard and a free version of guitar hero. I love the fact that many of the games use the motion sensitive technology like driving games. I enjoy the free puzzle games such as jigsaws or simple time wasting games like paper toss where you have to toss bits of paper into a bin with a fan blowing at various strengths veering the paper off course. Whatever your interests are I am sure that you will find a range off applications to have fun with.

Technical Support

A real downside to the iPod touch is the difficulty that you have trying to find answers if your i-Pod starts acting up. After only a few days of using my i-Pod touch would not let me open applications going back to the menu screen when I tried to open aps. I probably spent a good couple of hours on the apple website trying to find some product support, there is the option of both one free phone call per i-Pod and buying a support package if you live in the USA or Canada but those options do not seem to exist in the UK. I did eventually find the answer to the problem on the user forum on the Apple website and fix the fault which was due to a malfunctioning application but I dread any problem happening in the future.

If your i-Pod does develop a mechanical fault where it needs replacing or repaired under warranty then Apple do provide a good service. My daughters i-Pod nano malfunctioned a few months after we bought it last year and after filling out a form on the website Apple sent a courier round to pick up the faulty player the next day. You could track the progress of your repair online and the player was returned within a few days. I was initially furious when the service report stated that they would not fix the i-Pod because it was water damaged but eventually my daughter admitted that her i-Pod had been through the washing machine. The player does still play after it has been washed but the screen no longer works so I suppose that shows exactly how sturdy the i-Pod range is!

Overall

The 8GB I-Pod touch has the smallest memory within the range but I chose it because of the lower price of around £139, I was not prepared to pay over £200 for a 16GB model. This allows you to store up to 1750 songs or 10 hours of video. I have a mixture of music, photos and video stored and still have room to spare on the memory, I realise having a smaller memory will mean I will have to delete content, especially video, to enable me to add new stuff over time but I am happy with this option. It would be very easy to fill 8GB within a short space of time so beaware of that when you decide which size of memory to go for.

Overall I am happy with my i-Pod touch, it is a fantastic piece of technology which looks stylish, fits into my handbag and allows me to stay connected to the internet, send emails, listen to music and watch video on the go. I am only giving it four stars as I think there are some annoying features which could be ironed out like the lack of 3G connection which would let you use maps when you can’t connect to Wi-Fi, or the lack of a stylus to allow you to type more easily and the difficulty getting help if you have a technical problem. I have found the i-Pod touch easy to use with good connectivity to Wi-Fi and thus reliable internet access. It is a gadget which I am happy to own and I am sure that I will have many hours of fun using it
