I just sold my soul to the Devil - or so it feels like it after signing up for a two year contract for an O2 iphone. My mother would be highly disproving if she knew the cost of this transaction. But was it worth it?
So far it's been a love-hate relationship between me and my Iphone. Why hate? Well, there's the fact that it would not turn on last night, not even when I tried to charge it. I almost threw it against the wall. I swear I even bit it with frustration. All I did was turn it off at the cinema just for me to go home and find out it wouldn't turn on again. This is a problem. I don't use my landline phone and everybody contacts me via my mobile. If there's an emergency I'm screwed. So can someone then tell me why my iphone wouldn't turn on last night and then magically would turn on this morning if severely craving battery charge? This is not the first time I have had issues with iphone products. I have an Ipod nano which once froze like Windows which I had to leave overnight to run out of battery before I could get it to work. And this is not the first time my Iphone has done this - only last time it lasted a few minutes. But now it's working again what prove do I have to get it replaced?
I can only hope that this never happens again (I am scared to even turn it off now). I hope it never happens again as the iphone is a rather wonderful product with a massive variety of features...
*~FEATURES~*
If I was to go into detail about all the things that an iphone can do, this review would be insufferably long. However, I am going to make a
modest attempt at reviewing its main features...
~Calling and Messaging~
An iphone has all the standard calling and texting features but it does take a lot of getting used to. When people text you the messages come up in the style of internet instant messaging so that you can see the previous interchange of text messages. This is pretty useful but there are a few annoyances I have with iphone text messaging. There's the keypad. I can deal with a touch screen but what I cannot deal with is feeling like my fingers are too fat even when I tilt the phone on to its side to gain a larger version of the keypad. I always liked to think I had 'piano hands' which means that I can only feel really sorry for people who do have larger fingers. The other annoyance is that there's no drafts feature like other phones and you can't forward messages to other people. Calling is pretty standard. I like how you can have a picture and a particular ringtone for a particular person (I know when my mum's calling so I know when to avoid her...) Again, its keypad is pretty hard to get used to, especially when you are making one of those phone calls to companies and they ask press 1 for and etc and you haven't got the keypad up in front of your eyes.
~Internet~
This is one of the major perks of the iphone is 'free' access to the internet wherever you go. You can access your e-mails on here and I even managed to use it to access my internet banking the other day. The only downfall is that the net speed isn't really that fast and you'll need a wifi connection to watch videos on youtube and BBC Iplayer, so no watching Mock the Week on the train sadly.
~Ipod~
I could only really afford the cheapest contract which meant getting an iphone with 8GB or less which is a shame because I could really do with more memory for my songs. The iphone has the standard features of an itouch. I particularly enjoy the fact I can make playlists on the iphone and that I can listen to music without headphones. The sound quality is excellent. But do be careful not to answer calls when you have it hooked up to a sound system. I was with a group of friends and my iphone was connected to the speakers and my mum rang. I completely forgot that it was my music that was playing and suddenly everyone could hear everything my mum was saying - slight embarrassment. Woops...
~Ringtones~
This was something that annoyed me to the end of the earth. That you can buy a CD or download an itunes track and yet Apple make it so difficult for you to turn that track into a ringtone. I have, however, found the solution to this problem - audiko.net provide free ringtones for iphones that is so easy to do.
~Applications~
The iphone offers a huge variety of applications many at a price but there's no way I would spend any money on those so I only use the free applications which I consider enough to keep you preoccupied. I particularly love the radio application I have which I use to listen to Classic FM and Xfm.
~Camera~
The iphone also has a camera. It's not a brilliant camera so don't buy the phone for the camera but in all honesty, it is the best camera I've ever had on a phone which doesn't say very much for my past phones. It doesn't have a flash so it depends on natural light but it's an alright substitute for a digital camera at the moment (since I was stupid enough to get my old one waterlogged in a storm at the Florida Keys).
*~Other Aspects of the Iphone~*~
I could go on forever about the many features of the iphone. I use it as an alarm clock and to time things in the oven. The google maps feature is amazing. Not only can you locate places on the map but they can tell you where these places are in relation to where you are. There is so much you can do on this phone. There is declaration I would make of the iphone, however, and that is that it is a Jack of all trades but master of none. A better camera phone and faster internet would make a world of difference. I also feel like some of the features take up necessary space. For example, I don't have a clue about the stock market so the stocks feature is completely useless to me. I'd love to have the option to delete it. One thing I have noticed is that the phone definitely gobbles a lot more battery power than other phones I've had particularly if you are using a lot of the features and applications on a constant basis. If you going away on an overnight stay I definitely would not forget the charger!
*~APPEARANCE~*
There's no doubt that the iphone is aesthetically pleasing. It's slim and rectangular and fits perfectly into my hand. Very swish...
*~PRICE~*
Now here is the part where I feel like I've sold my soul. This phone is not cheap and the fact that O2 hold a monopoly over it does not make it any cheaper. I am currently signed up for a 2 year contract at £35 a month and £10 insurance. That's £45 a month. But I always wanted a phone like this and I do love it despite some of its disadvantages. And I may drop the insurance eventually. I'm not even entirely sure it's much good. Nevertheless, my contract provides me with unlimited texts and 600 minutes which is all that I need.
*~So IS it worth it?~*
Despite some of the problems I have had with this device I still continue to love it. I couldn't imagine not having it now. It is so handy. The fact it helped me locate my date the other night (some bar I'd never heard of) and keeps me entertained in long queues at my local Tesco Metro are but two of the many perks of this device. It's easy to use and is great for long train journeys but it does come at a price.
*~Amusing Thought of the day about the Iphone~*
It has a touch-screen which is heat activated, right? So you'd be screwed if you were Edward Cullen or a member of the fang gang? ^_^
*~Thanks for reading~* :)
