A good choice

Advantages: Good optical research
Disadvantages: Research not varied.
...The Department of Physics and Applied Physics was awarded an excellent rating for teaching in the last external UK review. Staff were found to be professional and approachable. Research facilities centre on optical techniques, such as spectroscopy and coherent source development but also includes nuclear and electronics research. A commercial facility is also affiliated to the department in the form of the Institute of Photonics and recently the Optical Materials Research Centre has become commercial. Located in the John Anderson Building off Rottenrow, the department enjoys an active social atmosphere and is highly recommended....

Advantages: Friendly department, variety of modules, ranked in world top 20
Disadvantages: Heavy workload, department need a bit of renovation
...the wooden doors are many friendly tutors and PhD students who form a friendly and helpful community. Everyone seems to know everyone else here, and there is a genuine interest to make sure students and collegues feel 'included' and settled.
There are a variety of courses on offer by the department, including physics, physics and astronomy, physics and space science, physics with medical physics, as well as physics with mathematics, and theoretical physics. Many of these offer the option of doing the 3-year BSc, or the 4-year MSci. The 4-year course is more adapted to those who aim to go on and do research after their degree due to the extended final year project, which allows for hands-on research. The 3-year course can of course still lead to research since it can directly lead onto a 1-year masters. My advice for when applying, is to apply...

Advantages: Excellent teaching, friendly staff, good course content
Disadvantages: Damned difficult!
...I studied for an honours degree in the department of Physics and Applied Physics from 94-98 - a BSc (Hons) Laser Physics and Optoelectronics, to be precise. I've stayed on at Strathclyde after finishing my first degree for a PhD (see my op on Postgraduate studies) so I'm probably one of those best qualified to write about this topic after being there for seven (count 'em) years.
The reason I chose Strathclyde was proximity to where I was living (within commutable distance, 10 miles as the crow flies) so that I could stay at home. However, on joining the department I realised after a couple of months that I'd made a good decision with regards to course content too.
I applied through the usual UCAS method for the Pure Physics degree (not knowing what Laser thingy and Whatsit-otherthings was then) as I'd enjoyed physics at school...
