When we brought Baby B home from hospital she was being breast fed but we had a tub of formula in the cupboard as a 'just in case'. Mrs B had been too ill to pay much attention to which formula I bought and I'd just picked up Cow and Gate mainly because it was cheaper and I'd heard of it.
When we decided to start mix feeding we went for the tub that was in the cupboard and made up a bottle of the formula. This didn't go down well. Baby B was extremely sick and then hardly slept at all. The next day we spoke to some friends who advised us to try Aptamil (for some reason this product is spelt on ciao incorrectly) as Cow and Gate is often too rich and Aptamil is seen as the 'porche of the formula world'.
The tub
When we came across Aptamil in the baby food section of our local supermarket the first thing we noticed was that it was more expensive than the other milks, only by a pound but I am sure this would soon add up if your baby was solely bottle fed. The tub isn't anything fancy, it's not all bright and colourful with pictures of babies on the front like other formula tubs, instead it is a simple blue tub with a white polar bear on. It does not say 'formula milk' on it but 'breastmilk substitute' which suggests it is
in a different league to the other formulas on the market.
The tub itself has the information about how to make up a feed and how much your baby should be having. The lid is resealable with a plastic lid that clips back down. It is useful as it keeps the powder dry and sealed, but the lid is so very hard to open. It's not a case of just lifting it up, I still don't quite understand what it is you're meant to do to make it open but it always involves me using one hand to squeeze the cardboard tub and the other to pull the lid forwards befor elifting it. This seems to work!
Making up the formula
The details are on the side of the tub which is always useful. I don't know about you but if it's on a slip of paper inside I often lose the paper or can't be bothered referring to it and try to memorise it. This however is printed on the side so ther's no chance of forgetting. You simply make it up by:1. Washing your hands and sterilising all of the equipment. 2. Boiling freshly run water and then letting it cool for 30 minutes. 3. Measure out the required amount of water into the bottle. 4. Using the scoop measure out the powder. 5. Add the powder to the water. 6. Place the lid on the bottle and shake well. 7. CHeck the temperature before serviing to baby.
There is a table which tells you how much to use for example up to 2 week old babies that weigh roughly 7lb should be having 3oz of formula per feed. With each ounce of water you use one scoop of formula. The scoop is able to be levelled off as there is an inbuilt leveller inside the box which ensures that you don't overheap your scoop.
Ingredients
This is the best formula on the market as it's the closest to breast milk you can get. It is nutrionally complete, has unique oligosaccharide blends, nucleotides, LCPs and Halal approved. The ingredients list is very long with allsorts of products including lactose, vegetable oils, calcium, soya lecithin, vitamin b12, vitamin d3, zinc etc etc.
Per 100mls prepared there are a huge amount of vitamins and folic acid which are essential for your baby.
Other forms
This is Aptamil first which is meant for babies who are not on any solids yet. There are also hungry baby milks, easy digest milk, follow on milk and 1year plus available. These also come in ready made packs of 7ozs so you don't have to fuss with adding water and measuring powders. These are more expensive, for one carton they are about 59p but they are ideal if you are out and about. We have used these when we have been to a wedding and didn't want to carry around all sorts of equipment.
My opinion
Baby B didn't have this milk very often, just once a day so Mrs B could have a rest from breast feeding but when she did have it she was more than happy. She has never been sick on it like she was with cow and gate and she has thrived. She was born a tiny baby and has now crept up and weighs a healthy 17lb at 8 months. This formula was definitely a good recommendation to us. We will definitely keep using this as Baby B continues to need formula milk. The price of it is £7.99 per tub and a tub lasts us about a month which is ideal but this is only because we don't feed formula as much as breast so if you were to just use formula then it wouldn't last anywhere near as long.
I think the only thing I would like to improve about this is the box design. It annoys me how the lid is fiddly to do. I can manage it myself now and something one handed but it is very frustrating especially when it's full it seems more difficult. This should definitely be improved as it's very frustrating !
You can buy this from your local supermarkets although it's not as widely available as other formulas so it may not be available in your local corner shops and petrol stations like other formula is.
Baby B and I definitely recommend it to you.
