Toothpaste is one of those things most of us probably take for granted... we use it (well, most of us) at least twice a day, but do you ever think about whether your toothpaste is actually any good?
So far as toothpaste is concerned I'm not the sort of person who buys the same brand/make every time - I like to see what's on offer. However, there are only a few brands that I'll tend to buy - Aquafresh, Colgate and occasionally Macleans. Guess I've been sucked in by the marketing and believe that these brands are better than others somehow... But out of the three, Aquafresh is the one I most often buy. Added to that, I like to think that my toothpaste is doing the best it can for my teeth (yep - probably sucked in by the marketing again), therefore I like to go for the brands that offer 'complete protection' and 'whitening' too.
Aquafresh
Multi-Action + Whitening seems to find its way increasingly more often into my shopping trolley. Packaged in what can only really be described as a spangly blue box it certainly stands out on the shelf. On the front of the holographic box the packaging claims that this toothpaste offers 'complete protection', 'gentle whitening' and 'fresh breath'. The reverse of the packaging goes into more detail, showing little cartoon pictures of how it 'gently breaks up stains to get teeth whiter', 'helps prevent the build-up of deposits which can attract stains', 'helps kill bacteria' and 'helps maintain strong teeth, healthy gums and clean fresh breath'. As far as I'm concerned this just about covers all I'd want from a toothpaste!
All the information on the outer box is repeated on the toothpaste tube itself. As with the majority of toothpastes these days, Aquafresh comes with a flip-top lid, which although saves you from dropping it on the floor and losing it, does occasionally get a bit gunked up with toothpaste.
Now onto the important bit - the toothpaste itself. Aquafresh is well known for being the brand with the three stripes. This version comes in red, white and blue stripes (in fact I've not seen any other colour stripes in Aquafresh toothpaste for a long time, though I'm sure there used to be a green one). Even before removing the lid you can tell that this is very minty - the smell is powerful and refreshing.
After use you definitely get a fresh breath feeling, and this lasts for quite a while. Teeth feel nice and clean too, though it's obviously difficult to say how much of this is due to the toothpaste and how much is down to the way you brush your teeth.
Although I've been using Aquafresh Multi-Action + Whitening for some time I'm not 100% convinced by the whitening claims. I'd like to think that it's helping to keep my teeth nice and white, but as my teeth have always been quite white I can't say I've noticed any difference. My teeth do feel clean for a long time after using this, so perhaps the claims regarding helping to prevent the build of deposits are true, and as I've not got any fillings, nor do I have any need for them I'm satisfied that it does the job in getting rid of bacteria when I brush.
This toothpaste does contain flouride and is not suitable for under 7's. The packaging sensibly warns that if irritation occurs to discontinue use.
Summary: ~~~~~~~~~~ Out of the toothpastes I tend to buy, this one is certainly a favourite. My teeth are certainly very healthy therefore I can only presume that the toothpaste is doing some good! The strong minty taste is extremely refreshing, though may not be to everyone's taste. Despite my praises however, I will only rate Aquafresh Multi-Action + Whitening with 4 out of 5 stars - this is because I'm still not convinced that I haven't just been sucked in by the marketing and the pretty box - saying that though, I definitely recommend it. Price-wise, this toothpaste will set you back about £1.97 at full price for a 100ml tube, though is often part of a buy-one-get-one-free promotion.
Verdict - it will remain one of my favourites... until something even more spangly comes along!
